2 years after last one-on-one meeting, potential match for Crown Jewel pits Roman Reigns against John Cena

John Cena has been back in WWE for over a month now, with The Cenation Leader being one of the strongest points of Friday Night SmackDown for quite some time. He is expected to stick around until the end of October, with recent rumors of Cena facing Roman Reigns at an upcoming pay-per-view event.

Cena and Roman Reigns have shared the ring together for a lot of times in their respective careers. They even squared off about two years ago at SummerSlam, where The Tribal Chief defeated The Cenation Leader to retain his Universal Championship.

Roman Reigns vs John Cena potentially to feature at Crown Jewel

Ever since John Cena’s arrival on SmackDown on September 1, he has been feuding with The Bloodline. Cena was interrupted by Jimmy Uso, who then received an Attitude Adjustment at the hands of the 16-time World Champion. In the weeks that followed, the rivalry between Cena and The Bloodline only grew more intense as Solo Sikoa joined the fray.

This isn’t John Cena’s first run-in with The Bloodline. 2 years ago, at SummerSlam, he battled Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship. This time however, The Tribal Chief has been absent from the blue brand for over two months, which caused The Cenation Leader to fill his void.

Cena’s former rival, AJ Styles joined him in his battle against Jimmy Uso and Solo Sikoa. However, Styles was quickly disposed off by the Enforcer of The Bloodline, who sent off The Phenomenal One in an ambulance. Luckily, LA Knight came out to join Cena against Sikoa and Uso at Fastlane, setting up for a much-awaited encounter.

Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Radio has recently pointed out that maybe WWE is building a second Universal Championship match between Roman Reigns and John Cena at Crown Jewel this year. It could happen considering Reigns has been confirmed to defend the Universal title at the upcoming event in Saudi Arabia.

Although it’s unlikely that Cena would win the title at this point, considering his 2-month run with WWE is about to come to an end in a few weeks, the matchup between the two megastars would surely be a spectacle to watch.

Cena faced Reigns for the titles at SummerSlam 2021

John Cena made his return to WWE two years ago, around the time of SummerSlam 2021. He quickly set his sights on the Universal Champion Roman Reigns, who was just a year into his dominant title run. The two men had a pretty intense buildup to the match, with Reigns even raising the stakes, saying that he would either leave SummerSlam as the Universal Champion, or he would leave WWE altogether.

The matchup between Roman Reigns and John Cena was pretty great to say the least, with The Cenation Leader trying his best to bring The Tribal Chief down, hitting a top rope Attitude Adjustment in hopes of capturing the title. However, that was not enough to put Reigns down for the count, who made sure that Cena’s 17th World title reign would not come at his expense.

Towards the end of the match, Reigns hit Cena with a devastating Spear, which put the 16-time World Champ down for the count. Before The Tribal Chief could celebrate, Brock Lesnar made his shocking return to the company. Although The Beast was ready to throw hands after a 17-month absence, Roman Reigns avoided a fight and exited the arena.

It would be pretty interesting to see the Roman Reigns and John Cena clash for a second time at Crown Jewel, albeit the outcome of the match is more or less guaranteed. Facing The Tribal Chief before he eventually goes on another hiatus would definitely be a good thing for both Cena as well the WWE Universe. Stay tuned for further updates on Roman Reigns and The Bloodline.
