21 years after making a spectacular SmackDown debut, Rey Mysterio provides a major update on WWE’s future

Rey Mysterio is one of the biggest names in the pro wrestling business. After wrestling for almost 30 years, he has earned himself the prestigious title of Hall of Famer by performing in the Stamford-based promotion. He is also considered as the Luchador legend by his fans.

However, The Master of 619 supposedly teased his retirement plan a few months ago during an interview. The WWE legend wants to retire before the age of 50.

WWE icon Rey Mysterio teases retirement

WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio is still going full throttle even at the age of 48. Rey is the current WWE United States champion. He returned to WWE in 2018 after a long hiatus. Since his return to WWE, he has been performing regularly. At WrestleMania 39 he even had a very impactful match with his son Dominik Mysterio.

Despite having such a good run in WWE, Rey Mysterio is planning to retire before entering the age of 50. The Ultimate Underdog wants to spend time with his family after retiring. In March 2023, Mysterio appeared for an interview with WESH 2 News. During the interview, he talked about his retirement plan.

“I’ve always had this number in mind and it just kept getting higher and higher every single time just because of how great my body has been feeling and overall. But, I had 5-0, 50 was the number that I said I was — I cannot and I don’t think I will go past it,” said Mysterio.

Rey Mysterio stole the show in a glorious WWE debut

On July 25, 2002, Rey Mysterio made his debut in WWE SmackDown with the name of his uncle. On that night Mysterio’s opponent was longtime friend and in-ring rival Chavo Guerrero. It was a very high-octane match.

Rey had a grand entrance as he leaped into the air while making his way into the arena with his energetic entrance music. Rey’s entrance alone got the fans excited for the fight. Considering it was the debut match of The Master of 619, it’s easy to understand why there was so much hype surrounding the match. Mysterio’s unbelievable technical and aerial abilities were something new for the fans to witness.

Both superstars started throwing punches at each other from the beginning. As the match continued it felt like Rey might lose the bout due to Chavo’s dominating moves. However, the tables turned as Rey delivered some unique aerial moves and he finished the match with his signature move 619. Till today that match is considered as one of the best debut matches in WWE.
