49ers face backlash as Brock Purdy plays Week 8 clash vs Bengals despite concussion concerns

The San Francisco 49ers cost-effective quarterback Brock Purdy shattered a new record a few days ago by going 5-0 in his first two years with the team. From getting drafted with the last overall pick and eventually ending up with the “Mr. Irrelevant” title, to grabbing the starter spot, the signal-caller came a long way.

Though the 49ers started the season incredibly well, Purdy’s performance was questioned by many fans and analysts. Besides struggling due to his performance, the QB also suffered a concussion during his team’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings. But he continued his play in the following matches, and a renowned doctor didn’t shy from bashing the franchise for letting him resume play shortly.

Neurologist slams 49ers’ decision on Brock Purdy

Ahead of the Week 8 clash against the Cincinnati Bengals, the 49ers’ HC Kyle Shanahan announced that Purdy has cleared the protocol. After coming out of the injury report, he was ready to play in the campaign.

However, a video from the 49ers vs Cincy clash captured a moment when the quarterback’s head snapped back and took a hit on the ground. The signal-caller immediately grabbed his head like he had felt something, a scary thing for the team as he had just come out of the concussion protocol. Dr. Chris Nowinski, a prominent doctor, shared the footage on social media to bash the team for letting him play just 6 days after a concussion.

“The way Brock Purdy grabbed his head here, I strongly suspect he felt something.
Because it was the end of the game & they have a bye week, everyone will pretend nothing happened. It was a terrible idea to play him 6 days after a #concussion,” he said via The Spun.

Days back the doctor said Shanahan would have to be “insane” to play Purdy 6 days after a concussion while referring to the Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa’s last year’s instance. He also slammed the franchise for putting Purdy at risk for a life-altering 2nd concussion when they have a bye week the next week.

Nevertheless, the 49ers still played their QB1 in Sunday’s match. He even didn’t leave the contest after taking the big hit. Now, the team needs to have serious thought about the vet’s game status in the upcoming match against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Nov. 12, after enjoying a Week 9 bye week.

Seahawks secure NFC West lead as 49ers’ losing streak continues

Till Week 5, the 49ers were the only undefeated team in the 2023 NFL season besides the Philadelphia Eagles. The 5-0 team now slipped to 5-3 after a few games. They smashed five teams with a big defeat at the start of the season and even smashed the Dallas Cowboys with a 32-point victory.

However, just following the Week 5, the 49ers misfortune started when they had a narrow 17-19 loss to the Browns. The losing streak continued as they embraced a 17-22 defeat from the Minnesota Vikings, and the Week 8 clash against the Bengals marked their three back-to-back defeats.

With these back-to-back defeats, the 49ers have now lost their top spot in the NFC West to the Seattle Seahawks who are now 5-2. Purdy’s squad will have a contest against their divisional rival Seahawks on Nov.24. Ahead of the contest, they would have to face off against the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Now, it remains to be seen if Shanahan’s troops can gear up themselves in these campaigns and secure their top spot in the division once again. Do you think that they will be able to do that? Tell us in the comments.
