WWE superstar R-Truth recently returned to the WWE Universe at Survivor Series 2023 after being on hiatus for almost a year. Reason behind Truth’s hiatus was sustaining injury during an episode of NXT while competing against Grayson Waller.
Since returning to WWE, Truth has started a great storyline with the Judgment Day faction. However, this storyline might not have become a reality for Truth a few months ago, and retirement from in-ring competition seemed like a real possibility for the multi-decade veteran.
R-Truth talks about complications with a previous knee injury
R-Truth sustained an injury during an NXT event in November 2022, due to which he was unable to perform for a long time. But finally, he was able to make a comeback at the Survivor Series 2023 last year. Recently, he disclosed that his leg was at risk of amputation as doctors found complications arising from the injury.
During an interview on “The Ringer Wrestling Show,” R-Truth opened up about the health problems that caused him to take a prolonged break from wrestling. He disclosed information about a serious infection that started with a routine quadruple tear, which resulted in a hole in his knee. The infection included multiple bacteria, including MRSA and staph. R-Truth also described a challenging recovery process that involved numerous surgeries, a wound VAC, and a PICC line that lasted for several months.
“I had a hole in my knee. I had five different bacteria that caused the infection, along with MRSA, staff, and their cousins and kinfolk. It started as a routine quadruple tear. I tore my bottom quad. They went in, and I guess it could have happened during surgery. I went to get the stitches out, and we found out that the bacteria, the infection, was eating from the inside out, so that’s where the hole came from. The doctor said, ‘We gotta get this under control. If we can’t get this under control, I’m going to have to think of options. You’re in the woods, big time. We have to get this under control.’ It would not heal,” said R-Truth.
”Then I had to go three months; I had to have a wound VAC on. It was a VAC on my knee that kept sucking up the old blood and putting in the new blood, all that stuff. I had to wear that for six weeks, along with a PICC line that I had to have for eight weeks. I did that, and once all that was over with, the stitches started coming out on their own. So I had stitches coming out of my knee by itself, so my body wasn’t agreeing to it, so I had to get surgery for a third time, and the infection was still there, so I had to get another PICC line as well,” R-Truth added.
R-Truth WWE career highlights
WWE superstar R-Truth made his wrestling debut in 1999 at NWA. Later in that year, he also got signed by the WWF and won the Southern Heavyweight Championship twice. In 2000, Truth made his debut on Monday Night Raw. In his first run on the Red Brand, he won the WWF Hardcore Championship. However, in 2002, he was released from the WWF.
After being away from the Stamford-based promotion for almost six years, R-Truth returned to WWE in 2008. He started a new gimmick of a rapper and used to do rapping while making an entrance inside the ring. In 2009, he joined the roster of WWE SmackDown and won the Bragging Rights match. One year later, Truth formed a tag team with John Morrison. At WrestleMania XXVI, they were brutally defeated by Show-Miz.
In April of 2010, Truth was drafted to Monday Night Raw, where he started a rivalry with Ted DiBiase and won a major bout. One month later, he defeated The Miz to win the WWE United States Championship. However, Truth lost the title back to The A Lister after only two weeks.
Surprisingly, in 2011, R-Truth turned heel and began feuding with 16-time WWE champion John Cena. R-Truth took the alias of Cena sarcastically, and he called that imaginary character Little Jimmy. At Capitol Punishment 2011, Truth faced John Cena for the WWE Championship and lost in a humiliating way.
In 2014, R-Truth began teaming up with New Day member Xavier Woods. The duo were getting love from audiences for their performances until Russian superstar Rusev defeated them in a handicap match where they both faced him at the same time. After the loss, the tag team was disbanded once and for all.
After that storyline, R-Truth adopted a new gimmick where he had amnesia and acted to have lost memories. At Royal Rumble 2015, he brought a ladder, thinking that it was a Money in the Bank ladder match, and tried to win the match but got eliminated by Kane in a hilarious way. In 2016, Truth was again drafted to Raw, and he got the opportunity to form a tag team with WWE legend Goldust. The tag team gained a lot of hype but failed to win any titles and was later disbanded.
In 2018, Truth joined the main roster of WWE SmackDown. He was involved in a storyline with former WWE superstar Carmella, and they formed a partnership. The team of these two stars became an instant hit and were involved in major matches. In 2019, Truth was again drafted to Raw. In May, the 24/7 Championship was introduced, and Truth was lucky enough to become the inaugural champion of that title. At present, Truth is involved in a storyline with Judgment Day.
