What led to the cancellation of the Dolphins-Jaguars game? Exploring WR Daewood Davis’ scary injury

Just a few days ago, the New England Patriots and Green Bay Packers’ Sunday preseason match was canceled in the fourth quarter following a scary injury of the Patriots cornerback Isaiah Bolden. The young star stayed motionless before being carted off the field, albeit the injury didn’t result in a serious consequence. The Miami Dolphins wide receiver Daewood Davis also went through such an incident in his team’s last preseason match.

Davis, an undrafted rookie, played collegiately for Oregon Ducks (2018–20) and Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (2021–22). During his senior year at WKU, the young star recorded 63 passes for 872 yards along with seven touchdowns.

Daewood Davis injury forces cancellation of Dolphins-Jaguars game

During the NFL preseason game between the Dolphins and the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday night, the latter team was leading 31-18 before Miami’s Davis suffered an injury in the fourth quarter of the game.

The Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel and Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson had a discussion on the field before a ref declared to cancel the match with 8 minutes, 32 seconds remaining.

“The two teams agreed that football should not be played for the rest of the night. Without a shadow of a doubt, I know that was the right call”, Mike said.

Pederson said the preseason time is challenging for the players as they can only use this chance now to earn a spot on the roster before the final cut, albeit he noted the player’s safety is above everything.

“As a head coach, you start looking at your team. You start looking at their team… We got player reps involved and New York involved. It’s the right thing to do at that time. This game is all about player safety. I know it’s a preseason game and some guys are fighting for spots and all that, but at the same time we want to make sure that everybody’s 100 percent.”

Meanwhile, Mike got choked up while talking about the injured player’s personality and bonding with his team members.

“He’s a great spirit, first and foremost. He’s magnetic. He’s got a cool personality to him. He’s a guy that his teammates really root for. That tells you everything about a human being.”

Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa said such an incident fell heavy on everyone’s heart and also heaped praise on the WR for his brotherhood in the locker room.

How did Daewood Davis get hurt?

Davis was trying to catch a pass from the Dolphins QB James Blackman before taking a hard hit from the Jaguars linebacker Dequan Jackson, and eventually going down to lay motionless on the field. The whole Miami bench emptied, and Jacksonville athletes also crowded on the field as he lay face-down for several minutes.

The 24-year-old star was attended to by medical personnel from both teams before ultimately getting carted off. According to the official post of the Dolphins, the veteran was conscious and had movement in all extremities after he was taken to Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville for further evaluation

The Jaguars will open the regular season against the Indianapolis Colts on Sept. 10 while the Dolphins will face off against the Los Angeles Chargers on the same day. What’s your prediction regarding the games? Which team do you think would get their first victory in the regular season? Let’s have a discussion in the comment section.
