Chiefs reportedly eyeing ex-Eagles star as Patrick Mahomes backup ahead of third Super Bowl quest in five years

With less than two weeks until the start of the regular season, the 32 NFL teams are busy deciding their ultimate roster cuts to finalize their regular season squad. Meanwhile, the Kansas City Chiefs are in a quest to provide their veteran Patrick Mahomes with proper backups to continue their winning streak.

From Mahomes serving as the backup quarterback of the Chiefs’ former QB1 Alex Smith during the 2017 season to Chad Henne serving as QB2 behind Pat, the team has enjoyed a great combination of signal-callers. However, Kansas City is in search of a formidable backup following Chad’s retirement after his second Super Bowl this February.

Chiefs open to bringing in Carson Wentz as backup to Patrick Mahomes

According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has been thinking of bolstering his team’s offense by enrolling free agent Carson Wentz in their roster, and both parties were reportedly involved in a discussion this offseason.

“Carson Wentz and the Chiefs did talk this offseason. There was some dialogue about Wentz potentially joining the Chiefs maybe down the road, or at least, you know, keeping that communication open.”

Reid signed Blaine Gabbert in free agency and they have Chris Oladokun, and Shane Buechele as the backup options behind Pat, albeit Fowler said Wentz wants to embrace the opportunity of playing in the shadow of a winning team.

“And I was told the Chiefs were fairly receptive to that idea. Certainly, they respect the talent. And I was told Wentz is open to getting to a championship-type team, getting into a new winning culture, where he can learn, you know, sit behind a Patrick Mahomes.”

According to OddsChecker US, Kansas City is given +300 odds or an implied 25 percent chance to sign the 30-year-old veteran and OddsChecker spokesperson Kyle Newman said the franchise can grab the opportunity to make a deep postseason run, especially after losing their long-time backup Chad this year.

How many years did Carson Wentz play for the Eagles?

After being selected by the Philadelphia Eagles as the second overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, Carson was projected to have a successful stint with the team till he sustained an injury during Week 14 of the 2017 season. He spent five years with the Philly squad before losing the starting job to Nick Foles.

The rest of his career was full of disappointments as the veteran couldn’t manage to find a stable position in any roster. He was first traded to the Indianapolis Colts in 2021 and went 9-8 as a starter with the team after missing out on the postseason. He played the last year with the Washington Commanders and started only seven games before rolling up the season with a poor 2-5 record.

Nevertheless, Wentz still holds Philadelphia’s all-time single-season touchdown record (33) in 2017 and hence, the Chiefs or any other NFL teams might consider giving him a chance to prove his caliber once again.
