“Not even close to halfway”: Patrick Mahomes on his potential to surpass Tom Brady in GOAT conversation

Tom Brady’s incredible 23-season career in the NFL has left a lasting impact, with successors like Patrick Mahomes now taking on the challenge of filling his shoes. Meanwhile, in just his seventh NFL season, Mahomes has already achieved two Super Bowl victories, solidifying his status as a top contender alongside Brady for the title of the greatest of all time.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is being modest about the never-ending discussion about who is the greatest quarterback of all time in the NFL, even as he leads the team to another Super Bowl participation.

Patrick Mahomes downplays GOAT talk

Patrick Mahomes played down similarities to seven-time Super Bowl winner Tom Brady during a recent press meeting, pointing out that he is in the early stages of his career.

“I mean, I’m not even close to halfway, so I haven’t put a lot of thought into it,” Mahomes said.

The 28-year-old stated his focus on being the best player he can be and acknowledged the privilege of playing alongside exceptional teammates. With his sights set on defeating the formidable San Francisco 49ers and securing a third championship ring, Mahomes remains grounded in the present.

“Your goal is to be the best player you can be. And I know I’m blessed to be with a lot of great players around me. And so, right now, it’s doing whatever I can to beat a great 49ers team and try to get that third ring.

When Mahomes talks about how great Brady’s accomplishments are, his modesty really comes through. Mahomes is obviously talented and has a lot of promise, but he keeps a low profile because he knows there is still a long journey ahead.

“And then if you ask me that question in like 15 years, I’ll see if I can get close to seven. But seven seems like a long ways away still.”

Not only Mahomes himself, but his father, Patrick Mahomes Sr., who was recently arrested, also claimed Brady’s “GOAT” status over his son. Nevertheless, Brady himself shared a cheeky reply in this ongoing debate.

Comparing Mahomes to Brady’s Super Bowl journey

The upcoming Super Bowl LVIII marks Patrick Mahomes’ fourth appearance on the grand stage of the NFL’s championship game. Remarkably, at just 28 years old, Mahomes stands as the youngest quarterback ever to reach a fourth Super Bowl.

However, Brady’s stellar career includes an amazing 21 seasons as the main player, which includes an unmatched seven Super Bowl wins. His incredible 10 Super Bowl appearances, which set a new record, highlight his remarkable success.

While the 28-year-old Chiefs’ player aims to secure his third NFL championship in just his sixth full season as a starter, Brady’s journey to his third Super Bowl victory came in his fourth season as a starter at the age of 27.

Brady’s legacy began with his first season as the primary starter, culminating in the New England Patriots’ first championship in Super Bowl XXXVI. Similarly, Mahomes tasted victory in his first Super Bowl appearance, leading the Kansas City Chiefs to victory against the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV, per KCTV5.

It will remain to be seen if Mahomes ends up being a perfect successor to TB12 in terms of Super Bowl glory.
