Frank Lampard backed for Chelsea return but not how Chelsea fans would have liked

Frank Lampard is rumored to be linked with Chelsea once again. The frustration among Chelsea fans has intensified as their team continues to struggle. Despite significant spending in the transfer market, they currently sit in 11th place in the Premier League table.

This has caused disillusionment with manager Mauricio Pochettino, and there are growing calls for a change in leadership. Rumors suggest that the club is considering a shake-up in their overall structure, with Todd Kline joining the board.

Frank Lampard tipped for a different challenge with Chelsea

Frank Lampard is now being rumored for another sensational return to Chelsea, the club which made him the legend he is today. Having won numerous titles during his playing career, he retired as one of their all-time greats. He later returned as a manager on two different occasions, though both were unsatisfactory.

Lampard is now linked with another return to a managerial role at Chelsea, though not in the way many would be expecting. He is not being linked with a move to replace Pochettino as the men’s head coach, but to the soon to be vacant spot of the head coach of the women’s team.

Emma Hayes, who has successfully led the Chelsea women’s team for the past 12 years, achieving numerous trophies and overseeing their most successful period, is set to depart. Cementing herself as one of the premier women’s coaches, she is moving on to lead the US Women’s national team.

With this transition, the club faces the challenge of finding a suitable replacement to maintain the team’s dominance. Former female soccer player Izzy Christiansen recently suggested to LiveScore that Lampard could be an ideal candidate for the role. While Lampard’s coaching performance with the men’s team has been underwhelming, Christiansen believes he could excel as the successor for the women’s team.

Frank Lampard’s previous Chelsea spells

Frank Lampard is the club’s record goal scorer, and definitely one of their best ever players. But as a manager he has not been the same, having two spells to prove that. He was first appointed in 2019, where he managed to take them to a top four finish despite a transfer ban.

Frank’s tenure saw a lot of young talents like Mason Mount and Reece James emerge to the first team. But he was sacked in 2021 after failing to win anything and seeing his dressing room fall out, being replaced by Thomas Tuchel. He had a short stint at Everton where he was also sacked after a year.

Lampard was appointed as caretaker manager upon his second return to Chelsea, replacing outgoing manager Graham Potter. He was only appointed for the rest of the season, as the club was going through a tumultuous period following the American ownership takeover.

This second tenure was only more than a month long, with 11 games managed. He only won one match, and led them to a bottom half finish in the Premier League. So far it seems, Frank Lampard has not replicated the same success as a player into his managerial career.
