Robert Whittaker is looking to bounce back from a brutal second-round TKO loss to Dricus du Plessis at UFC 290. He’ll have a chance to do so against Paulo Costa in the co-main event of the upcoming UFC 298 PPV, headlined by Alexander Volkanovski and Ilia Topuria.
The fight will take place in California, where Whittaker is currently training at one of the state’s best MMA gyms. This renowned gym is home to many top UFC fighters like Beneil Dariush, Marvin Vettori, Giga Chikadze, and Kelvin Gastelum.
Robert Whittaker trains with Beneil Dariush
The former middleweight champion and two-time title challenger Robert Whittaker is training with 7th-ranked UFC lightweight Beneil Dariush at King’s MMA, preluding his fight with Paulo Costa at UFC 298. Dariush is on a two-fight losing streak, but before that, he had an eight-fight winning streak and looked poised to contend for the undisputed lightweight title.
Whittaker’s fight with Costa has immense significance, particularly due to rumors of Dricus du Plessis looking to defend his title against Israel Adesanya at UFC 300. The Australian has only lost to du Plessis and Adesanya in the middleweight division of the UFC. A victory over Costa could get him a third crack at the title he lost to Adesanya at UFC 243.
Whittaker had recently sent a stern warning to Costa at the UFC 298 press conference as he vowed to hurt Costa. Moreover, he also stated that he would defeat Dricus du Plessis nine times out of 10 and admitted to not taking the then-lower-ranked du Plessis seriously at UFC 290.
Beneil Dariush is on a two-fight first-round losing streak, but both of those losses were against top contenders Charles Oliveira and Arman Tsarukyan. Oliveira and Tsarukyan are scheduled to fight at UFC 300 in a number-one contender fight.
Fans mock Whittaker and Dariush for weak chins
Robert Whittaker and Beneil Dariush training together at King’s MMA did not go unnoticed by fans on social media. Both fighters have an elite MMA pedigree but have been susceptible to power punchers, as evidenced by their brutal KO losses.
“The no chin crew”, commented one fan about Whittaker and Dariush training together. “Benny x Rob Ohhh wow. Two glass jaws training together”, commented another fan further trolling the duo. “Glass chin with glass chin”, commented yet another fan again trolling the fighters for their susceptible chins.
It needs to be noted that both Dariush and Whittaker have shown their propensity to overcome adversity in fights inside the octagon. Whittaker’s fight with Yoel Romero and Dariush’s fight with Drakkar Klose are the best examples of it.
Nonetheless, they have been prone to power punchers in their recent fights. Both Oliveira and Tsarukyan easily knocked down Dariush whereas Whittaker had also been dropped by Adesanya in their rematch before the du Plessis fight.
