WWE Speed was introduced last year as an experimental move to create a show exclusively for X (formerly Twitter). The show has a format featuring matches with a 5-minute countdown clock, where wrestlers must face each other and secure a victory within the time limit.
This year, during the WrestleMania XL Kickoff show, it was announced that the X show would return this spring. WWE fans are excited for the new premier show and hope to see some new wrestling talent make their first appearance in this year’s edition.
What exactly is WWE Speed?
WWE Speed was the inaugural show resulting from collaboration between Twitter and WWE, designed to attract new talent. It was first announced during last year’s SmackDown Live event, featuring matches between RAW wrestlers, NXT wrestlers, and some free agents within WWE.
The concept centered around a 5-minute time limit for each fight, with participants required to defeat their opponents before the countdown reached zero. During the recent WrestleMania XL Kickoff show, WWE commentator Michael Cole announced the news about the upcoming “WWE Speed” event, which will start this spring.
WWE released the news on their Twitter account, captioning, “WWE Speed is a new weekly video series showcasing up to 5-minute matches which will be distributed exclusively on X! Beginning Spring 2024, WWE and X will deliver the new format for high-paced timed matches showcasing your favorite WWE Superstars!”
The first WWE Speed event saw Nathan Frazer facing off against Bronson Reed, while Cedric Alexander faced Axiom. According to The Wrestling Observer, when two WWE wrestlers fight each other in the X event, the person who wins the match will receive one point, and the person who was defeated is docked one point.
WWE’s expansion in streaming market with Netflix
Netflix and WWE revealed a secret deal that will enhance the Monday Night RAW experience for fans. According to reports, Netflix will acquire the media rights to the Red Brand and will move the event to the streaming service in January 2025. The contract includes the rights for the event for a 10-year period. It is supposedly a $5 billion deal that will make the wrestling more available to people.
Netflix’s Chief Content Officer, Bela Bajaria stated, âWe are excited to have WWE Raw, with its huge and passionate multigenerational fan base, on Netflix. By combining our reach, recommendations, and fandom with WWE, we’ll be able to deliver more joy and value for their audiences and our members. Raw is the best of sports entertainment, blending great characters and storytelling with live-action 52 weeks a year and weâre thrilled to be in this long-term partnership with WWE.”
