Super Bowl champ Richard Sherman sheds light on Patrick Mahomes’ unstoppable comeback

The Seattle Seahawks’ legendary star Richard Sherman decided to put an end to his glorious NFL career after the 2021 season. Just a few days ago, the cornerback revealed his “light bulb moment” came while he was facing troubles in guarding the Philadelphia Eagles’ rookie DeVonta Smith in a Week 5 game of his last season.

Besides claiming Smith aka the NFL young star’s caliber as a potential reason behind his retirement, he recently blamed the Kansas City Chiefs superstar Patrick Mahomes for stealing his potential Super Bowl ring while his former team the San Francisco 49ers faced off Kansas City in 2020.

Richard Sherman reflects on Super Bowl heartbreak

Though the Chiefs were initially having a 10-point deficit in the final match against the 49ers, they clinched a 31-20 victory over San Francisco. During a recent appearance at Undisputed, Sherman held Mahomes‘ outstanding athleticism as a reason behind their loss.

“You had to show me clips of a Super Bowl that breaks my heart to this day, because that man (Mahomes) gunned, seven minutes to go in the game were up 10, he went, I want to say 20 unanswered points.”

Pat threw two interceptions at first, albeit he showcased an MVP-level performance by finishing the match with 26/42 completions for 286 yards along with two passing touchdowns and ultimately ensuring a Vince Lombardi trophy for Kansas City. However, the ex-49ers veteran didn’t forget to back up his former quarterback Jimmy Garoppol0.

“Our quarterback didn’t play defense. We had the number one defense in the land that year, I did not play well. He (Garoppolo) went out there and he threw strikes, he threw strikes, he ran the ball well, he executed well.”

Jimmy recorded 20/31 completions for 219 yards along with a touchdown pass as well as two interceptions in the match. He is now playing as the dual-threat of the Las Vegas Raiders while the 49ers are trying to make another run keeping Brock Purdy in the starting quarterback’s spot.

With which team did Sherman win his Super Bowl ring?

Sherman won his one and only Super Bowl ring (XLVIII) with the Seattle Seahawks in 2013 by securing a 43–8 victory over the Denver Broncos, and it also got marked as the third-largest margin of victory in Super Bowl history. He enjoyed two other Super Bowl appearances with Seattle (XXXIX) and San Francisco (LIV).

After getting drafted by Seattle as the 154th overall pick in the fifth round of the 2011 NFL Draft, the footballer spent seven years with the franchise before heading to the 49ers in 2018 to play for them till 2022. He later played with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021 before finishing his NFL journey with 37 interceptions along with four more picks in the postseason.

What’s your take on Sherman’s comment about Mahomes? Do you think that only Pat’s caliber led the Chiefs to win their first Super Bowl? You can share your opinion with us in the comments.
