Gregg Popovich uses Michael Jordan as example for Wembanyama
With the Spurs on course to have another losing season, legendary basketball coach and head coach Gregg Popovich has asked the San Antonio fraternity to stay calm and composed, assuring them that success would follow soon, through none other than Victor Wembanyama.
The Spurs have already shifted their focal point to the next season, towards the next year’s draft in which the team has a high chance of landing another rising superstar, thereby facilitating the process of creating one of the best young super teams, one of the visions of Coach Pop himself.
Urging fans to be patient in the quest for success, the coach reemphasized his stance on the team, implying that great things take time to build and that the fans need to wait. Using the legendary Michael Jordan and one-time champion Nikola Jokic as examples, Pop said, “You know, people’s opinions. … They don’t know, they don’t understand. When they see us draft someone like Victor, everyone knows he’s talented. It is not just about talent. Michael Jordan’s first title came in his seventh year. Nikola Jokic just won his first ring and it took him eight years.”
Popovich also reminded fans that the path to success was a tedious process, saying, “It takes time to build a team. If it were that easy, you’d have a different champion every year. For the last twenty years, we’ve had the same organizations. Our cycle of success has been long, stretching over three decades. At some point, you have to start from scratch. This is where we are today.”
