While Kyrie Irving is known for his ability to dance around defenders with his magical dribbling, Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama has established himself as a dominant threat in the paint on both ends of the court.
The combination of the two players is absolutely dazzling, and both players have locked horns numerous times this season, with Kyrie winning the latest edition of the battle between the two players.
Kyrie Irving discloses Wembanyama response to his hesi
Yesterday, the Dallas Mavericks took on the San Antonio Spurs, absolutely destroying the young team led by none other than Victor Wembanyama. While Wemby put up very respectable performances, he was overshadowed by one play that went viral all over the Internet, truly mesmerizing NBA fans all over the world.
The play featured the Mavericks’ Kyrie Irving who provided the rookie with his very own “Welcome to the League” moment. Using his arsenal of swift moves and agile turns, Kyrie went at Wemby who confidently took up the challenge without hesitation. However, the rook wasn’t ready for the tricks Kyrie had up his sleeve. With a combination of speed and agility, Kyrie hesitated, thereby misleading Kyrie before he efficiently scooped up a middle layup. A task that was easier said than done was the talk of the town after Kyrie made the ridiculous layup.
It was an amazing play, as acknowledged by Wemby himself. According to Kyrie, Wemby later termed the shot a “lucky shot” in a comical manner. Kyrie further said that he was blessed to have made the shot. Speaking on the play, Kyrie said, “Big fella just came over and said ‘that was a lucky shot’. But you got to laugh at it. I caught him with the hesi, baseline, he thought I was going to go reverse but I went middle.”
While Kyrie might have just won this battle, this was only one of the duels between the two players.
Wembanyama earned his first NBA block against Irving
The number 1 rookie in the 2023–24 NBA Draft, Victor Wembanyama, made his NBA debut against Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving and the Dallas Mavericks. Since his first matchup, the rookie has had the will to compete and hunger to succeed, which was very evident in the game against the Mavs.
Standing at 7’4″, the player made full use of his height and blocked a shot attempt, outstretching his arms. The block, which happened to be the player’s first ever recorded block came against Kyrie Irving, thus marking the beginning of the battle between the two players.
All three matchups between the two teams have been won by Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks, who have shown no mercy to the Spurs, who seem to have shifted their focus towards next season as part of roster building and planning. Meanwhile, Wemby surpassed Michael Jordan to become the fourth fastest player to reach 1000 career points in the NBA.
