Bahrain GP: why was it cancelled in 2011?

The Formula 1 industry has witnessed numerous unfortunate incidents and unpredictable situations that have led to the disruption of Grand Prix events. One noteworthy example is the 2011 Bahrain Grand Prix.

Unbeknownst to many, the Bahrain International Circuit did not host any Grand Prix in the year 2011. Political situations in the Island of Pearl had heated up to such extent that the fan favorite circuit was removed from the Formula 1 calendar.

Why was the 2011 Bahrain GP cancelled?

On February 21st of the 2011 season, the Bahrain Grand Prix was cancelled due to reports of human rights abuses committed by the Bahrain authorities. Drivers such as Damon Hill and Mark Webber also joined the protest.

Later on, circuit chairman Zayed Alzayani released a statement that said, “Whilst Bahrain would have been delighted to see the Grand Prix progress on October 30th, it has been made clear that this fixture cannot progress, and we fully respect that decision.”

“We want our role in Formula One to continue to be as positive and constructive as it has always been, therefore, in the best interest of the sport, we will not pursue the rescheduling of a race this season.”

Even though the event was postponed to October 30, it sparked rage among human rights campaigners. Over 455,000 people were organized by these campaigners and signed an online petition urging sponsors to boycott the campaign.

The ongoing unrest in the country was finally brought to a conclusion by the cancellation of the Bahrain circuit from the F1 calendar, which was the first country to host an event in the Middle East at that time.

Which teams have been most successful in Bahrain GP?

Since 2004, the Bahrain International Circuit has been hosting Bahrain Grand Prix and a few other Formula 1 events. It is not entirely easy to clinch victories on the circuit with its simple layout but difficult corners. To nail the apex following the straights is quite challenging, with the hairpin presenting a tricky point. Only four drivers have been able to win more than once on the circuit.

Mercedes and Ferrari are currently tied for seven wins, with Red Bull and Renault in the following second and third positions, respectively. Here is a more detailed table for the year-wise Bahrain Grand Prix winners:
