DC Dennard Wilson explains Titans new game plan ‘attacking defense’ to secure NFL glory

When it comes to NFL clubs that have failed to win a Lombardi Trophy, the Tennessee Titans are unfortunately right up there. Not only did last year’s campaign end with a poor 6-11 record, but it also seemed like this year would be no different.

However, there is reason to be hopeful now that Dennard Wilson is in charge as the Titans’ new defensive coordinator. His presence brought renewed hope and a sense of excitement to Titans fans as they eagerly awaited the upcoming season.

Dennard Wilson talks on Titans’ new strategy

At a recent press conference, Dennard Wilson discussed the main goal of his new position. He emphasized that success in football depends more on the players than on the strategic framework alone. His main focus is to pinpoint their strengths and customize the game plan to maximize their abilities.

“Football, it’s not about the scheme, it’s about the players. So, we have to figure out what they do well, and we’ll put the scheme around them to allow their talents to flourish.”

The defensive coordinator also envisions an approach characterized by relentless pressure without compromising on competitiveness, setting the tone for the team’s style of football moving forward.

“We are going to be an attacking defense. We are going to be violent in our approach. We are going to be smart, we are going to be intelligent, we are never going to compromise for competing, and that is the brand of football we are going to play around here.”

Earlier this month, Titans’ new head coach Brian Callahan, who joined the team after the second interview, made the decision to bring Wilson on board. With 12 years of NFL coaching experience under his belt, Wilson’s hiring adds valuable expertise and depth to the Titans coaching staff.

How good was the Titans’ defense last season?

The Titans’ offense was criticized at times, but the defense stole the show, ultimately earning the best red zone defense rating in the NFL based on success rate. The Titans’ strong defensive performance in the red zone resulted in only 42 percent of passes being completed (16-of-38).

This top-ranking achievement in red zone defense disproves the notion that everything is amiss for the Titans. Notably, their performance in this area is significantly better than the league average, standing at 14 percent lower than the standard completion rate of 56 percent, per Yahoo Sports.

However, it’s essential to acknowledge that beyond their success in the red zone, the Titans’ defense exhibits less favorable standings in various other categories. These include being at the bottom half of the league in statistics such as takeaways (32nd), quarterback hurries (31st), opposing quarterback rating (31st), and quarterback pressures (30th).

With new zeal, Dennard Wilson must focus on the areas for improvement in their overall defensive performance.
