Who is Ashley Scoggin suing university, coaches for alleged sexual misconduct?

The University of Nebraska is being sued for the involvement of its staff in the physical abuse of a player, which led to the player’s suspension from the team.

Ashley Scoggin sues Nebraska University: Who is she?

Almost two years after the alleged incidents, Ashley Scoggin who now plays basketball for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas has decided to attempt for justice regarding the alleged unfortunate incidents that occurred in her time with the University of Nebraska.

According to civil reports filed on Sunday, the player accused her former associate Head Coach Chuck Love of ‘using his position to influence to groom her into a sexual relationship.’ The allegations are beyond serious, as they not only list Love but also include the player’s former Head Coach Amy Williams and the university’s athletic director Trev Alberts as defendants in the case.

The lawsuit implies that Love personally mentored Ashley Scoggin, promising her extended support and slowly making advances by inviting the player for drinks and sending messages late at night while she was trying to focus on an academic internship within the athletic department.

According to the suit, the pair eventually commenced a sexual relationship and Ashley Scoggin was fearful of reporting Love to her head coach, Amy Williams out of fear of her retaliation. Furthermore, according to Scoggin, Love created an environment which suggested that the coach could control the trajectory of the player’s present and future in terms of basketball.

Ashley Scoggin has also alleged that her refusal towards sexual activities had resulted in reduced game time, thereby controlling her athletic career on the court. Scoggin suggested that Love would often summon Scoggin to his room when the team travelled on road games.

She further stated that head coach Amy Williams took no measures to protect Ashley despite an obvious ‘abuse of power, ethics and status’ by Chuck Love. After learning more about the connection between the two individuals, Ashley Scoggin was suspended and eventually removed from the team by Williams who also suspended Love, with pay.

Nebraska University’s statement on Ashley Scoggin lawsuit

The University of Nebraska took a very defiant stance on the Ashley Scoggin lawsuit, stating that they weren’t planning to comment on the specifics of the issue. In a statement put out by the University, the University said, “The University was made aware of the lawsuit this morning. While the University does not comment on the specifics of pending litigation, it does not agree with the allegations contained in the complaint and intends to vigorously defend this matter.”

Meanwhile, Scoggin’s attorney reinstated their stance against the University, speaking to The Athletic. The attorney said, “There are some very simple leadership principles involved here. A coach in charge should not have sex with the student he is in charge of. A Division I head coach should not have to be told that this kind of relationship is an abuse of power And, student-athletes should know they will be protected, not punished, if a coach is preying on them.”

Fans also rushed to Ashley Scoggin’s support through social media. One fan satirically wished the University well in the lawsuits, saying “Good luck lol. This stuff does not just appear out of the blue.”

Another supporter said, “Can’t WAIT to see how this plays out.”

With the lawsuit set to go down, all parties involved will hope to see justice prevail.
