Former Jets GM claims Steelers must prioritize Justin Fields trade over Kirk Cousins

The struggling Chicago Bears picked Justin Fields to turn around their losing culture. Though their starter has been making improvements season by season, seemingly they lost interest in their quarterback. While the team is reportedly seeking solutions by bringing USC star Caleb Williams, the NFL fans rallied behind Field.

Meanwhile, as Fields is now garnering attention as a potential suit for the Atlanta Falcons,  former New York Jets general manager Mike Tannebsm felt motivated to ink him with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Mike Tannenbaum claims Jets must sign Justin Fields

The Steelers are grappling with a quarterback situation given the presence of Kenny Pickett and Mason Rudolph on the roster, which complicates matters when weighing options such as Justin Fields and Kirk Cousins. Ex-NFL executive Mike Tannebaum made it clear that he favor Fields over Cousins, emphasizing the importance of long-term planning and Fields’ youth.

“If I’m Mike Tomlin, I’m looking at the longer-term view of things and as you said multiple times on the air, Justin Fields is younger than Kenny Pickett. You can get him for two years, roughly $28 million,” Tannenbaum said, per Gridiron Heroics.

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has suggested the necessity of quarterback competition, particularly with Pickett undergoing recovery from ankle surgery. Meanwhile, Cousins is recovering from a season-ending injury, while Fields showed significant progress in the 2023 season.

Fields showcased a 61.4 completion rate, 2562 passing yards, 16 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions. Therefore, Tannebaum’s proposal supports this concept by suggesting the Bears’ current starter as a strong contender to compete for and possibly claim the starting role.

Update on Kirk Cousins Vikings contract situation

Kirk Cousins’ future with the Vikings is surrounded by uncertainty, fueled by reports indicating his demand for a substantial $90 million contract. According to SI’s Albert Breer, the current Vikings regime is hesitant to guarantee Cousins’ next deal fully, deviating from their previous approach.

The voiding of the final four years of Cousins’ contract on the last day of the league year adds complexity, preventing the Vikings from franchising him due to the void date falling after the franchise tag window.

Both Cousins and the Vikings are eager to extend their six-year partnership with a fresh agreement. Nevertheless, despite the intentions, a contract extension for Cousins has not yet come to fruition, leaving the quarterback’s future uncertain. The experienced quarterback, heading into his 36th season, is currently recovering from an Achilles injury that halted a successful 2023 season, during which he achieved the third-highest passer rating of his career.

The looming deadline adds pressure, as Cousins faces $28.5 million in dead salary cap charges, accelerating onto the Vikings’ 2024 cap if he remains unsigned by that date.

The unresolved contract situation raises questions about whether the Vikings will retain their starter or potentially let him compete with Justin Fields for a spot on the Steelers’ roster.
