Ex-Formula 1 driver calls on Mercedes to sign Fernando Alonso to succeed Lewis Hamilton in 2025

The departure of Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari has left a noticeable vacuum within the team. Recently, Mercedes has indicated that they will carefully consider their choice for the primary driver, as it will be a crucial decision for the Brackley-based team’s future.

However, former Formula One driver Jarno Trulli publicly recommends the team swiftly bring in seasoned driver Fernando Alonso.

Jarno Trulli urges Toto Wolff to sign Fernando Alonso for 2025

Fernando Alonso is undoubtedly the oldest driver on the grid, with top-tier experience since he has been in the motorsports industry for decades now. Despite being 42 years old, the Spanish driver refuses to retire from the grid, defying all the odd problems faced due to his age, which also demonstrates his passion for driving.

Earlier on, Alonso had taken Sebastian Vettel’s place in Aston Martin due to his retirement, which was incredibly strategic planning by the team as they had witnessed the Spaniard’s mind-blowing performances in the past. However, with his recent contract with Aston Martin expiring this season, many are speculating Alonso’s transfer to Mercedes to fill the huge gap left by Lewis Hamilton.

Jarno Trulli, an ex-F1 driver, fuels the speculation more by advising Mercedes to hire the 42-year-old, as he could be the sole member of the grid to have more experience in the industry than the seven-time World Champion. He said, “If I were in Mercedes, I would take him, and he would jump into a car that finally works.”

Furthermore, Trulli also highlighted Alonso’s knowledge about cars and driving style compared to today’s youthful drivers by saying, “Today’s cars tickle those who raced 20 years agoIn 2023, Lusail only needed one GP in conditions somewhat similar to those in which they once raced and the riders arrived half unconscious. Once upon a time, you went flat out from start to finish; now the engineers tell you at what pace to turn to get to the end, and you execute .”

Fernando Alonso once had beef with Lewis Hamilton in 2007

In 2006, Fernando Alonso already had his second title and a contract that would expire soon with Renault. Seeking this opportunity, McLaren decided to hire an experienced driver and a rookie in the team to boost the team’s performance further. The rookie was none other than the current seven-time world champion, Lewis Hamilton.

However, their plan severely backfired, with a huge fight breaking out among the two remarkable drivers. This was mainly due to Hamilton surpassing Alonso in the first turn of the Hungarian Grand Prix, which had profusely triggered the Spanish driver’s ego as well. On the other hand, the young Britishman refused to just assist Alonso in winning the race but rather also compete fairly in the race.

After this incident, due to their contrary opinions, a cold war was formed between the two drivers, which is visible sometimes off and on tracks even now.
