Former Man City CB accuses backup GK Scott Carson of horrendous goalkeeping skills which cost him £1million back in 2008

Scott Carson is not the most famous name in the Manchester City squad. As a matter of fact, some people might not even know that he is still in the books at the Etihad, but that’s how much Pep loves the legendary goalkeeper. Since signing on loan from Derby County in 2019, Carson has been a mainstay in the City team despite the lack of minutes.

The experienced goalkeeper signed a contract extension last June, keeping him at the club until 2024. This has not stopped former City star Micah Richards from reminding Carson of his role in costing him about £1 million in 2008 as England failed to qualify for EURO.

Micah Richards blames Scott Carson after £1 million loss

Micah Richards was one of the brightest youngsters at Manchester City during his early years at the club. As an academy graduate, the club treated him with so much respect, so it wasn’t surprising that the former England international had a bonus of £1 million in his contract at just 20 years old if only England qualified for the Euro 2008.

Ironically, Micah Richards started the last qualifying match against Croatia – a must-win for Steven McClaren’s side to earn a spot in the tournament hosted by Austria and Switzerland. The team conceded a silly goal eight minutes into the game, a shot that could have been easily saved by Scott Carson, who started for England in goal at Wembley. England went on to lose the game 3-2, with Croatia booking a spot in the tournament instead of the Three Lions.

“The team we had that day…we didn’t have Rio or John Terry. It was a mixed-bag team. Beckham was on the bench as well, but we thought we could get a draw. I blame Scott Carson. He’s at Man City now, taking all the accolades, but he cost me a million pounds sterling! That was my bonus – get to the Euros, have many appearances for England, and you get more money on your contract at Man City,” Micah Richards revealed in a podcast featuring Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker.

Scott Carson still playing at Man City

While Richards is now enjoying his post-football career as a successful pundit, Scott Carson is still on Manchester City’s books after his contract was extended earlier this summer. The 38-year-old was part of City’s team that won the treble last season as he made one appearance in the Champions League against Sporting Lisbon. He was also named on the bench as City beat Inter 1-0 in the Champions League final, earning himself a medal.
