The 49ers are in hot water after a recent revelation regarding an accounting error related to the salary cap. As a result, the team has been penalized by the NFL, forfeiting a fifth-round pick in the 2025 draft and seeing their fourth-round pick in the upcoming 2024 draft moved down four spots.
The league issued a statement explaining the situation, citing administrative payroll accounting errors that occurred at the end of the 2022 league year, leading to a misreporting of player compensation.

“This action resulted from a league review that found administrative payroll accounting errors at the close of the 2022 league year that resulted in a misreporting of the club’s cumulative player compensation,” the statement read.
Nevertheless, the league confirmed that the 49ers would have remained compliant with the salary cap regulations at all times, and there was no evidence of deliberate attempts to circumvent the cap.
“The NFL determined that the club would have remained under the salary cap at all times regardless of the error and there was no intent to circumvent the cap.”
The 49ers maintain a respectable position in the upcoming draft, still holding onto 10 picks overall despite the setback, per Bleacher Report. Notably, their fourth-round selections include pick No. 124 acquired from the Dallas Cowboys as part of the Trey Lance trade, as well as compensatory picks at No. 132 and now No. 135.
