Drew McIntyre is making a full-scale assault on WrestleMania XL intending to challenge Seth Rollins for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. But along the way, he got caught up in a bitter rivalry with CM Punk, who is now out of action due to an injury.
Although Punk is not currently competing in the ring, the Scottish Warrior has not been shy of taking digs at him in his promotional clips. Recently, Drew McIntyre ratcheted up the intensity of their rivalry by dubbing Punk “made of glass” and vowing to dominate him in the ring.
Drew McIntyre takes sly dig at CM Punk
Over the course of his wrestling career, CM Punk has encountered a lot of rivals. From clashes with Teddy Hart to altercations with Eddie Kingston, Punk’s path has been rife with conflict. But in the year 2024, Drew McIntyre seems to be the one who has the most hatred for the Best in the World after last year’s animosity with Seth Rollins.
During the buildup to the WWE Royal Rumble, the rivalry became even more intense, and the Scottish Warrior went so far as to target Punk’s damaged arm on RAW after the main event. Ever since that time, he has ruthlessly tormented Punk.
McIntyre recently told The Ringer that he was disappointed that Punk hadn’t recognized the value he brought to his wrestling career. In his excitement to smash CM Punk in the ring, Drew compared Punk to a fragile piece of glass.
The 38-year-old former champion noted, “Brought a few eyeballs, got a big payday, I get all that stuff. If you get put in a situation with me, I’m going to verbally tear your apart and physically tear your apart. I want that match with him, but I don’t believe he’ll be in a physical condition to wrestle Drew McIntyre. He’s literally made of glass, real glass, and I’ll break him.”
For those unaware, this is not the first time Drew McIntyre has provoked CM Punk. Since the Royal Rumble, their rivalry has only grown stronger. Just last month, McIntyre stated in an interview that he and CM Punk had genuine issues in WWE.
Drew McIntyre and CM Punk rivalry explained
While most WWE fans are pleased with CM Punk’s return, Drew McIntyre and Seth Rollins do not share the same feelings. Punk’s injuries at the Royal Rumble only served to heighten McIntyre’s already-present hate for him, which he first displayed upon his comeback at Survivor Series. McIntyre had no self-control as he relentlessly taunted the 45-year-old wrestler at WWE events and on social media.
Punk was questioned by McIntyre on Raw about his injuries, and McIntyre took great pleasure in the fact that he was the one who forced him to sit out.
In an interview with West Sport, McIntyre confirmed the rivalry by outlining their genuine issues. The former two-time WWE champion said, “I think this is going to be a heck of a moment. I want to build Punk up and say I can relate to him and say truthful things. Everything for me has to be based in truth, for me and that character, because if it’s real to me, it’s real to everybody else, and you’ll feel it.”
McIntyre made fun of Punk further by calling himself “Drew McIntyre punk” when he talked to Triple H before the Elimination Chamber. Recently, he mimicked Jack Perry’s comments at All In by playing Justin Timberlake’s “Cry Me A River” and making fun of Punk’s treatment with light weights on social media.
The only way for this rivalry to end is for them to square off in the ring. Will you bet on them facing off at WrestleMania again? Share your feedback in the comments.
