NFL Rumors: Louis Rees-Zammit to sign with Super Bowl winners Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs are aiming to achieve a rare feat by clinching a third consecutive Super Bowl victory after glorifying their name as a back-to-back Super Bowl winner. To bolster their roster, the Chiefs recently secured defensive standout Chris Jones with a lucrative contract extension and added depth by acquiring Marquise Brown.

Meanwhile, expanding their horizons beyond the NFL, the Chiefs are poised to introduce Welsh rugby sensation Louis Rees-Zammit to their team, potentially offering him a hybrid role.

Louis Ress-Zammit agrees to Chiefs’ deal

Young rugby sensation Louis Rees-Zammit is poised to make his mark in the NFL as he finalizes a deal with the Chiefs. The 22-year-old Welsh athlete is set to officially sign with the Chiefs on Friday, according to reports from Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report.

Prior to choosing the Chiefs, he explored opportunities with other NFL franchises, including the Cleveland Browns, New York Jets, and Denver Broncos.

The 22-year-old player has been honing his skills under the guidance of American football experts after having recently joined the NFL’s international player pathway program in January. This program is designed to cultivate promising athletes from various backgrounds, providing them with specialized training and a route to NFL rosters.

The young athlete proved his athleticism and potential during the IPP Pro Day last week, impressing scouts with impressive results. With a 40-yard dash time of 4.43 seconds, a 9-foot-7 broad jump, and a 29-inch vertical jump, Rees-Zammit caught the attention of the Chiefs coaching staff.

The Chiefs, who experienced moments of offensive stagnation in the previous season, are eager to inject creativity and talent into their roster. The addition of Rees-Zammit brings a wildcard element to their offense. It potentially offers a new caliber for the upcoming NFL season.

Which position will Louis Ress-Zammit play for the Chiefs?

Louis Ress-Zammit is expected to train in a hybrid role as he stands taller than most conventional running backs, per the Mirror. This will offer versatility to the Chiefs squad as both a wide receiver and a running back. Nevertheless, Schultz’s report says the young star will play either running back or receiver.

While his exact position on the field is yet to be determined, Louis Rees-Zammit has his sights set on the running back position, where he believes his skills will shine brightest.

“I think running back shows up probably best, getting the ball in my hand early, being able to pick a gap, being aware of the surroundings,” he said.

Meanwhile, his decision to pursue a career in the NFL came as a surprise to many rugby fans, considering his established status as a Welsh rugby international and star player for Gloucester. Nevertheless, he explained that the influence of his father played a significant role in his decision.

“It’s always been on my mind. My dad has been a massive role model to me… so it’s just amazing to finally do it now,” Louis Rees-Zammit said.

Nevertheless, for the former rugby player, there is still room for improvement. During NFL Pro Day, his performance in the vertical jump and broad jump fell short of expectations.
