Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence discusses initial contract extension conversations

As Trevor Lawrence gears up for his fourth year in the NFL with the Jacksonville Jaguars, talks about a potential contract extension have started to surface during the offseason.

Meanwhile, Lawrence revealed that preliminary discussions have taken place between him and the organization regarding a possible extension. Nevertheless, while Lawrence expressed his desire to stay with the Jaguars for the long haul, he understands that contract talks are not his immediate priority.

“There’s definitely been some conversations. As far as where that’s at now, it’s not really my focus. I’d love to obviously be a Jag for as long as possible. We love it here, and I love where we’re headed as an organization,” he said to ESPN.

Technically, there’s no rush for the Jaguars to finalize their quarterback’s extension, as he is under contract for the upcoming season and has a fifth-year option for 2025. Lawrence originally signed a fully guaranteed fourth-year NFL contract after being selected first overall in the 2021 draft.

Meanwhile, although NFL regulations permit him to engage in extension discussions following his third season, he prioritizes steering the Jaguars to victory rather than dwelling on contract extension negotiations.

Last season, the 24-year-old player led the Jaguars to an impressive 8-3 start. Nevertheless, the team faced challenges in the second half of the season due to Lawrence’s several injury issues. It led to adjustments in the quarterback position, including the addition of Matt Barkley and increased opportunities for C.J. Bethard.

Trevor Lawrence remains focused on team success over contract extension

Following Trevor Lawrence’s pivotal role in guiding Jacksonville to the AFC South title in 2022, the Jaguars commenced the 2023 season with momentum. However, they faltered in the latter part of the season, losing five out of their last six games and ultimately missing out on a playoff berth.

Hence, as the offseason brings discussions of contract extensions for elite players, Lawrence remains focused on improving his skills to benefit the Jaguars in the upcoming season. In his own words, he emphasizes his commitment to his team, regardless of his contract status.

“My job isn’t going to change whether I get extended or not before this season. My job is to go win games and to be the best I can be for this team so we can have a chance to win a Super Bowl. Even if I get the contract extension, that’s still my job even more so. So for me, I have the same focus and the same mindset.”

While the Jaguars quarterback’s dedication to his team remains unwavering, the Jaguars have until May 2 to decide whether to exercise the fifth-year option on his contract. This option would secure him for the 2025 campaign with a fully guaranteed salary of $25,664 million.
