“A close fight is not a robbery”: George Kambosos Jr offers his thoughts on controversial win over Maxi Hughes

Despite George Kambosos Jr’s recent victory after two years, the celebration was cut short due to a significant controversy surrounding the outcome. Instead of receiving appreciation, Ferocious faced strong backlash from fans.

George Kambosos Jr achieved a victory against Teofimo Lopez in his sole bout of 2021, extending his unbeaten streak to 20 fights. However, his winning run came to an end when he faced Devin Haney, who handed the Australian boxer consecutive defeats.

George Kambosos Jr drops hot take on controversial win over Maxi Hughes

Despite his win against Maxi Hughes in the IBF title eliminator at the Fire Lake Arena in Shawnee, Oklahoma, former unified lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr. expressed his concerns about the controversial victory.

Many believe that Maxi should have been the rightful winner. Ferocious secured the victory with scores of 114-114, 117-111, and 115-113, but he later shared his thoughts on the contentious outcome and how he perceives the situation.

“We won the fight by many rounds. That’s no discredit to Maxi Hughes. He had a couple good rounds. But a couple good rounds don’t win you the fight. We won a majority of the rounds. A lot of guys coming off losses wouldn’t want to take a test like him. This was a hard challenge,” George said.

Kambosos acknowledged the necessity of adopting a grittier approach during the fight since his opponent, the British southpaw Maxi Hughes, employed a lot of movement and avoided engaging frequently. He anticipated a tough challenge due to their different styles, realizing that being more gritty was essential to overcome such a tricky opponent.

George Kambosos Jr’s controversial win vs Maxi Hughes outrage boxing fans

Although Kambosos conceded that Maxi had a few impressive rounds, the boxing fans’ reaction to the fight’s outcome was far from content. Displeased with the result, fans flooded Twitter with their expressions of dissatisfaction regarding the bout’s verdict.

“Haney vs Loma was a close fight. This was not close. If you cannot make a case for a fighter winning at least 7 of the 12 rounds, then it is a roberry. This was a massive screw job.” a user said.

“This the 3rd time in less than 24 he’s had to give a lengthy explanation on why he won. If you won, stand on your victory and move on.” Juan Neal commented.

Another user expressed his dissatisfaction regarding the outcome of the bout saying, “1. Close fights can be robberies. If a boxer goes into a fight with a 2 or three rnd advantage (as is the case in many fights) then it’s already corrupt. 2. Most people seem to be saying this fight wasn’t even close.”

Chris Edwards thinks George lost the match as he commented,” I did rewatch it and have the same opinion and that’s exactly what it is an opinion I still think you lost the ring side commentary had you losing 9 rounds to 3 I did think it was a little closer than that.”

“Was a 8-4/7-5 kinda fight. Being really generous to Kambo you call it a draw & we get a rematch at least. A home win was in fact a robbery here.” another user said.

Brandon Fedor also thinks it was nothing but a robbery as he said, “He’s right about close fights not being robberies, this standard does not apply in the case of his fight.”

“What a liar. He said on the fight hub tv interview with Shakur that 117/111 was accurate as he only gave hughes few rounds. Now he’s backtracking.” Keemy said.

Abdul Barber made another explosive comment as he stated, “It wasn’t a close fight! It was an open robbery and we all witnessed Kambosos lost so many rounds against Maxi Hughes. This is ridiculous results from the judges and they should be sued by Maxi Hughes team otherwise they’ll continue doing what they’re doing and make it a habit! ”
