Oscar Piastri of McLaren seems to differ from legendary McLaren driver Ayrton Senna, who said, “If you no longer go for a gap that exists, you are no longer a racing driver.” It seems that the rookie has a set race strategy that is unaggressive and patient rather than rushing in.
The rising rookie this season managed to secure his first podium and best qualifying this time around during the Japanese GP. Oscar Piastri who is currently racing for McLaren F1 in his first season came in third place finish after the race.
Oscar Piastri talks on his performance at Japanese GP
Oscar was answering the reporters during the post race session of the Japanese GP, when he was asked if he could go back in the race and do anything different at the start.
Oscar Piastri explained his views on the topic, “I was in a perfect position to emulate Prost or Senna.”
Oscar described how he got a good start but then overexcitement caused to fall back against speeding Max Verstappen and despite being on the inner line, Piastri steered cleared against taking chances and sat at a comfortable 3rd place.
He said that it was the safest option at that point or it would’ve ruined his best race to date.
Oscar Piastri’s journey to F1 stardom
Oscar Piastri joined F1 in a controversial lawsuit against McLaren and Alpine, with both the mid field teams trying to recruit the F2 star in their teams. His debut season wasn’t well initially in an extremely slow McLaren. But, as the season progressed his work in the car and his talents were laid bare.
Oscar has been constantly working hard in a now competitive MCL60 and actually going head to head with his equally talented teammate Lando Norris. The recent results in Suzuka proved his balanced race craft and decision making ability.
Oscar was incredibly calm, not taking unnecessary chances and managing to keep attacking cars at bay while trying to close the gap ahead of him.
Oscar proved a golden catch for McLaren team so far and he has been given a contract extension on basis of his consistent performance. Considering, the trouble McLaren had to go through in recruiting Piastri, it is apt that the young Australian shows his racing skills and gives substantial feedback and impressive results to his ‘Papaya team’.
Oscar Piastri is a budding talent in the ever competitive Formula 1 world and he needs to stay competitive with an equally good car to show the F1 world what he is capable of.
