The New England Patriots were already in hot water due to their unimpressive start to the season. However, in their Week 4 game against the Dallas Cowboys, the Patriots were in a move to bounce back and their rookie player Christian Gonzalez also got off to an outstanding start to his NFL career on the occasion.
Unfortunately, after just four snaps in his debut year, the rookie cornerback heated the headlines with a serious injury on the night which also contrasted with the Patriots’ humiliating loss.
Injury update on Christian Gonzalez
Prior to their game against the Cowboys in Week 4, they already had a depleted cornerback room; now, as a result of Christian Gonzalez, they have even fewer cornerbacks.
Late in the first quarter, close to the sideline, Gonzalez sacked Cowboys running back Tony Pollard. He appeared to have right shoulder trouble at the moment. The 21-year-old managed to stand up but was unable to carry on with the game.
The player was immediately removed from the game and listed as questionable to return to the field by the Patriots. The cornerback was chosen by Bill Belichick as the 17th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft this offseason, and so far, he has been an essential component of the Patriot’s defense in nearly every game. As of yet, no new information on the player’s ailment has been made public.
Patriots vs. Cowboys match recap
A few standout defensive plays helped the Cowboys destroy the Patriots 38-3, and Mac Jones’ subpar offensive performance was mostly to blame for the devastating defeat.
The Cowboys scored the first points, made a field goal to go ahead by three points, and finished the first half with a seven-point advantage.
Due to their strong play on both sides of the ball, the Cowboys had complete control over the game. However, the Cowboys’ defensive effort picked up as they forced three interceptions, of which two were returned for scores. In the second half of the Patriots’ worst defeat, Jones was yanked from the game after committing all three turnovers.
In the final moments of the first half, Jones attempted to pass to Kendrick Bourne across the field. However, Cowboys star Bland moved in front and sprinted untouched 54 yards for a 28-3 advantage for Dallas.
Jones wasn’t the only Patriots offensive player who struggled that night; the entire unit did. Ezekiel Elliott, one of their three all-star running backs, concluded the game with 16 rushing yards on six carries and 6 receiving yards on two catches.
But just as in other games this season, nothing went well for Belichick’s side on this occasion, and the final result fairly showed that fact.
The loss in return delayed the head coach’s wish to surpass Don Shula as the most winning head coach of the NFL. Looks like Bill Belichick will have to wait longer than expected to ace the milestone.
