The UFC is infamous for making up fake accolades to hype up their fighters. The BMF title belt in particular is notorious for allegedly representing a ‘fearless’ fighter, with the first BMF titleholder ironically never actually defending his belt.
However, with Jorge Masvidal retiring, a new era seems to be upon us where two of the most violent fighters from the lightweight division are scheduled to duke it out for both the BMF title and a shot at the division’s champ.
BMF title: Origin, value
Introduced during UFC 244 in the vibrant city of New York, a new belt gained fame as the “BMF” title – an abbreviation for the “baddest motherf—–” belt. Unlike the conventional championships in the UFC, this symbolic title aimed to honor a cherished fan-favorite for their toughness and fighting spirit.
The idea for the BMF belt originated after a passionate speech by Nate Diaz at UFC 241, where he called out Jorge Masvidal. Diaz’s request for an East Coast vs. West Coast showdown to determine the ultimate “baddest motherf—–” in the UFC evolved into a highly anticipated clash for this unique title.
Ultimately, at UFC 244, Jorge Masvidal emerged victorious, defeating Diaz in a rather impressive manner. Masvidal landed more than 112 significant strikes, securing a TKO victory in the third round and becoming the inaugural BMF Champion. Although he never had the chance to defend the belt, his reputation soared following that memorable win.
Upon Masvidal’s retirement after UFC 287, UFC President Dana White saw fit to resurrect the BMF Title, recognizing that fight fans often desire to witness their favorite fighters in intense and thrilling battles.
Thus, after a hiatus of four years, the BMF Title is set to make a comeback at UFC 291. This time, it will be contested between two lightweight fighters – Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje. The much-anticipated event will take place on July 29 at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Dustin Poirier v Justin Gaethje 2 set to light up UFC 291
In 2017, Justin Gaethje made his debut in the UFC and has since accumulated a record of 7 wins and 4 losses with the promotion. Affectionately known as “The Highlight,” Gaethje’s fighting style has earned him a remarkable eleven performance bonuses. He is renowned for relentlessly trying to overpower his opponents, all the while building a reputation for his ability to endure punishment in return.
Dustin Poirier, on the other hand, became a part of the UFC roster in 2011 and has an impressive record of 21 wins and 6 losses during his time with the promotion.
The paths of these two formidable fighters crossed in 2018 when they faced off against each other, resulting in a TKO victory for Poirier. Both Gaethje and Poirier have proven themselves as fierce competitors in the Octagon, and their upcoming clash for the revived BMF Title at UFC 291 is expected to be an epic showdown between two extraordinary warriors.
