Jose Mourinho has been one of the best managers of the last two decades, reaching great success with many of the biggest clubs in the world. Unfortunately, his prime days as a manager are long gone, and while he is not in charge of a big club, the expectations from him are still sky high.
The Portuguese manager is once again in hot waters, something that seems to be the case for him at every club. Despite reaching European success with them, his current club, AS Roma, are now seriously thinking about sacking the Portuguese manager.
Jose Mourinho on verge of being sacked if Roma fails to win
Jose Mourinho did not have the best of starts this season, losing the first three games. They even lost 4-1 to Genoa, which was very humiliating for the fans. The Italian side are currently 13th in the Seria A, with just two wins. It is also the worst start to a season for Jose Mourinho, and it can now become even worse.
According to Italian media outlet Correire dello Sport, the owner of the club, Dan Friedkin, wanted to oust the manager after the 4-1 humiliation against Genoa. It is now being said that if the team loses against Cagliari in their next match, Jose could finally get the sack. They have reportedly also lined up a replacement in Hansi Flick, who was recently sacked as the manager of the German national team.
Jose Mourinho joined Roma in 2021 after being sacked by Tottenham. He made the team gel very strongly, which led to them winning the Europa Conference League and later reaching the Europa League final. Despite the poor start this season, Mourinho claims it is not his fault and that the club management should back him more. Jose did have a chance to leave this summer for Saudi club Al Hilal for a big contract, but stayed for the fans.
Mourinho’s history of sacking
Jose Mourinho is no stranger to being sacked. Despite being very successful at every club he has managed, the Portuguese coach has been sacked many times. Specifically, he has been sacked five times by four clubs, and it has also made him richer as well. The first is Chelsea, where owner Roman Abramovich sacked him twice, once in 2007 and again in 2015 during his second stint. He was paid Ā£18m and Ā£12.5m, respectively, when he was sacked.
Jose was also ousted from Real Madrid in 2013 for Ā£17m, despite his success with them. He was later again kicked out of Manchester United in 2018 after losing the dressing room and paid Ā£15m. His last sacking came in 2021 from Tottenham, which is the only club where he didn’t win any trophies. Ironically, he was sacked just before the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City, which they lost without Jose. Aside from the decision potentially costing them the trophy, it also cost them Ā£15m.
According to all the above data provided by Fox Sports, all in all, Jose Mourinho has earned Ā£77.5m ($95m) in his career just from being sacked. While he may get sacked from Roma, he won’t get much money this time as his current deal expires this summer.
