Is Thomas Müller leaving Bayern Munich? Exploring the contract situation of the life-long Bavarian

Thomas Müller is one of the best players Germany has produced in recent years. He has become an icon for his country and his lifelong club Bayern Munich, for whom he has contributed to win many trophies. While widely considered by many to be a great player, it seems he does not get the recognition he deserves.

Currently, the German playmaker has not played much this season, both owing to his advancing age and many rising talented players in the midfield. And now there is a huge doubt whether he will stay at the club.

Bayern CEO addresses Thomas Müller future

In a recent interview with Bild TV, Bayern Munich CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen revealed information regarding the continuity of Thomas Müller at the club.

He replied while there is no pressure regarding the issue, there is an age issue, “I don’t know if he wants to play until 67! We don’t feel any pressure. We have seen how important Thomas is for the team. We’ll see what happens.”

After the arrival of Thomas Tuchel as coach, succeeding Julian Nagelsmann, the German midfielder fell down the picking order. With players like Jamal Musiala, Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka it has been hard for the aging Müller to catch up.

While previous CEO Oliver Kahn expressed that he would not allow the veteran to leave, currently he is not at the club anymore. This has put Müller’s future into uncertainty with his contract running out.

The German also wants to play more and start more matches, otherwise he may think about leaving for another club. He has received offers from MLS and Saudi Arabia, but prefers not to go there still, as the 34 year old believes he has more playing days in him.

Müller’s Bayern contract details

Müller’s current contract at the club will run until 2024, after which he will be available as a free transfer. He can therefore choose a new club as soon as the upcoming January transfer window. The contract was extended in 2023, for just another season.

Currently he earns €390,000 a week, making him one of the highest paid players in Germany. If he is to sign a new contract, the club will try to reduce his wages and also try to convince him to play in a lesser role than before.

Along with Müller, captain Manuel Neuer will also see his contract end in 2024. It remains to be seen whether both of these veterans receive a new contract. Müller may not want to stay if he has to accept a lesser role at the club with less playing time. Already he has just 182 minutes in seven matches this season. For a player of this stature, it is a bit insulting for him.

It remains to be seen what happens of Thomas Müller at Bayern Munich. Regardless of the contract situation, he has to help his team win against Mainz on Saturday.
