Mercedes duo Lewis Hamilton and George Russell believe F1 to be more entertaining without Red Bull star Max Verstappen ahead of Belgian GP

Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing are on their way to completing another pair of constructor and driver championships this season. Mad Max has utterly dominated the sport this season. He has seven wins in a row and recently broke a record with Red Bull to have 12 straight wins as a constructor.

Red Bull took the reigns of dominance from Mercedes back in 2021, from which the German team hasn’t been able to recover, nor has their driver Lewis Hamilton. In a recent fanzone interview, Lewis and his teammate George Russell were caught joking about how the sport would be so much better without Verstappen and Red Bull.

Lewis Hamilton and George Russell on Red Bull ace Max Verstappen

Lewis Hamilton and George Russell of Mercedes commented that it would be much better for Formula 1 if Max Verstappen and Red Bull didn’t compete in the 2023 season, as they are easily winning the driver and constructor titles without any problems.

Lewis Hamilton in a fan zone interaction said that as they (Mercedes) develop their cars, everyone else develops their cars too, so the gap is not so easy to close between teams. But, to get pole position last week was an incredible thing, and he thinks he was just a tenth off the pole once again yesterday with Max out of the question.

George, in the same interaction, replied by saying: “Formula One would be so exciting if Max and Red Bull won’t be here at the moment. No…We super respect everything that they are doing at the moment and If you’re doing a great job then you deserve the victory but the fight for the second-best team at the moment between us McLarens Ferrari and the Astons is pretty exciting.”

Hamilton finished in fourth place in Friday’s qualifying; however, the seven-time Formula One champion was accused of obstructing his teammate while re-entering the track dangerously. Later, an inquiry revealed that the British racer got away with nothing.

Fortunately for Lewis Hamilton, polesitter Max Verstappen incurred a grid penalty due to exceeding the number of gearbox changes. This resulted in him being bumped up to third.

In an interview after the qualifying he had this to say, “At the end, I was still a good chunk off Max – pretty impressive,”

“I’m really happy with the result we’ve got. I have Max behind but the goal, of course, will be to chase those guys down… The car didn’t feel bad today, pretty decent.

“But in the middle sector, we’re losing a second, so I’ve got to go and study to try to figure out where that is and if there’s any way, within the package that we have, that I can close that.”

Do you think Lewis Hamilton has a shot at the podium this weekend with the likes of Charles and Sergio above him? And tell us your thoughts on the joke made by the Mercedes boys about Max Verstappen in the comment section down below.
