The Cincinnati Bengals are expected to continue the training camp without their starter Joe Burrow for several weeks following the right calf strain he sustained on Thursday. Though the veteran quarterback is expected to be back in time for Week 1, the Bengals decided to add an extra training-camp arm by signing Reid Sinnett.
After being signed as an undrafted free agent by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020, Sinnett had stints with three teams, albeit he has never got the chance to play in a regular-season NFL game. Currently, the franchise has Trevor Siemian and Jake Browning in the squad behind their starting QB.
Bengals lean towards free agent Reid Sinnett to proxy Joe Burrow
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network ensured the Bengals will sign former XFL star Reid following Sunday’s workout and said the announcement will be made official tomorrow.
“The #Bengals plan to sign FA QB Reid Sinnett after today’s workout, source said. The former San Antonio Brahmas starter in the XFL, he most recently played for the #Dolphins in the NFL. He’ll help Cincy manage practice with the injury to Joe Burrow. It’ll be official tomorrow.”

The 26-year-old played for the XFL’s San Antonio Brahmas in 2023 following signing with the team in November 2022. He had been a starter in one game and finished with 97 passing yards along with a touchdown before falling prey to a season-ending foot injury in March. The undrafted prospect in 2020 has worked out for several NFL teams before Cincy and spent time on the Philadelphia Eagles and Miami Dolphins’ practice squads during the 2022 season.
Burrow seemingly out for several weeks due to a calf problem
Joe was wearing a sleeve on the calf due to the soreness in that part of his leg following the first day of training camp. He hobbled on his one leg before going to the ground and had been carted off the field after pulling up with a noncontact injury on Thursday.
Cincy coach Zac Taylor revealed the 26-year-old signal-caller would miss some weeks due to the calf strain. However, he remained optimistic about the QB’s improvement and expected him to make a U-turn to the field soon.
“Joe got more days this July than he’s ever had in the NFL. So, I feel really good about that and the progress we’ve made during those July practices with Joe, and when he’s able to get back we’ll be able to get the work that we need.”
Joe did not practice Friday, but he was present for meetings at the Bengals’ training facility that day. The coach said he “has seen the doctors” and ensured though the footballer was wearing a compression sleeve on his right calf before the injury, he had no idea about any existing issue before that play.
Burrow guided Cincinnati to a Super Bowl appearance in his second NFL season and fans are keeping their finger crossed to see his return on the field soon to make another Super Bowl run in the upcoming season.
