Frederic Vasseur, the team leader of Ferrari, has been going through some major hurdles to create the next generation of the team recently. With a lack of the necessary needs, it can be pretty challenging for the team to choose the upcoming faces of the team.

Carlos Sainz has changed the prestige of the team since 2015; therefore, Ferrari is struggling to decide the next best players for running rookies in Formula 1.

Vasseur discussed one of the major issues while running rookies

Ferrari is going through a lack of opportunities for the young drivers who are preparing to compete on behalf of the team. Vasseur has explained the situation to be completely “schizophrenic.”

He told GPFans Global “The FP1 opportunity for the rookies, I think it is a good move for F1 in general.”

“It is the best exposure that we can give to the kids and I’m not sure that the FP1 is a very relevant session.”

“We did a lot in the past with Charles [Leclerc] and Antonio [Giovinazzi] and Callum [Ilott] but it’s not always easy because they are jumping in the car, they are not allowed to crash because we have FP2 two hours after.”

“It means that the first point is that ‘Guys, you don’t crash.”

“Then they have two stints of six laps the first stint, three-four laps the second one and they have to show something.”

“It is a bit of a schizophrenic and complex situation but it is like it is. At least on the exposure and the marketing side, it is probably very good for them.”

“It will help the rookie to find partners for F2 and I think it is a good decision and it is a good move and it is a good connection between the two series and I like it.”

Teams must run rookies under current rules

According to the present regulations, teams are required to have the rookie drivers participate in a minimum of two FP1 sessions throughout the year, given that  the driver has competed in fewer than two Grand Prix.

This is due to the restrictions on the number of testing teams that can conduct the ongoing season using their existing cars, further complicated by the addition of Sprint race weekends.

Teams that are following the rules will only be able to compete with the young drivers of the next generation.
