Since the era of Tom Brady closed with the New England Patriots, the team found themselves in the middle of a stormy night, suffering consecutive losses in all of their previous seasons. The losing streak goes on striking this season as well, carrying a great deal of frustrations for Robert Kraft, the owner of the team.
In a move to put an end to these losing streaks and assuring the owner with a bounce-back performance, the team recently bolstered their roster with a rookie offensive player.
Malik Cunningham joins Patriots amid team challenges
Though Bill Belichick is well known for his defensive schemes, his offensive game plan went quite successfully with Brady. Following his departure, Belichick tried to fill Tom Terrific’s shoes with Mac Jones, but to no avail, prompting him to bench Jones in two consecutive games of the season.
In the wake of these situations, the Patriots added rookie player Malik Cunningham to their 53-man roster, offering him a new three-year deal.
The Athletic reported first, stating the Patriots made the rookie player a “part” of their roster for their battle against the Las Vegas Raiders. However, it’s still uncertain whether the team will bench Jones in their Week 6 game for Cunningham as in spite of being a quarterback in college, Kraft’s team added him as an undrafted wide receiver.
Additionally, it may happen that they ultimately choose the quarterback option for Cunningham as the rookie player satisfied Belichick with his impressive stats in preseason games as per NESN.
“He plays a good amount of quarterback. He’s competent there. He’s a smart kid, he works hard, and the opportunities he’s had, he’s actually looked — he’s shown a lot of improvement doing them. It’s a little too early for an induction ceremony here, but it’s definitely a lot of improvement,” Belichick said.
Will Grier has already snatched the opportunity to replace Mac Jones. Furthermore, if the Patriots end up with Cunningham, Jones’ era in New England will surely suffer a setback as the team has already lost their trust in him.
Patriots CEO Robert Kraft reportedly frustrated with team’s performance
The Patriots 23-year New England Patriots season ticket holder Kraft owned the team in 1994. Only the person knows the level of emotions and feelings he cherishes for his beloved team.
Hence, his joys were known no bounds when Brady assisted him in being titled a six-time Super Bowl winner owner. The two-decade period of the 46-year-old was the most dazzling era in their franchise history.
Nevertheless, after finishing 8-9 last year, the team owner sent a memo to season ticket holders at the beginning of the calendar year. He took a vow of improvements on the field this season in favor of his team, yet the Patriots have been going on the same row this seasin as well.
Kraft’s team already sits with a 1-4 record so far this season, enough for the owner to be frustrated. The Athletic’s Jeff Howe was the first one, to report Kraft’s stance following these consecutive losses.
“On multiple occasions in recent years, he has lamented the team’s lack of a postseason victory in the post-Brady era. Kraft has grown frustrated, if not downright angry, over this shortage of success, according to people close to the situation,” his statement read.
As the team’s losing streak also led the NFL community to raise eyebrows on Belichicks’ success without the recently retired football player, Howe did not hold back from providing a bold prediction regarding the head coach’s job security. He wrote if the Patriots’ shortage of success goes on, Kraft will not think much before cutting ties with their long-tenured coach.
