Since closing the last season with a 3-14 record, the Chicago Bears are apparently walking on the same losing road. Hence, in their Week 6 matchup, Justin Fields and Co. stepped on the Soldier Field to battle with their divisional rival Minnesota Vikings and improve their standing, yet they met more nightmare than they bargained for.
The Chicago Bears not only fell 19-13 to the Vikings, but also lost their franchise quarterback in the middle of the game as a gruesome injury saw him leave the field.
Bears QB Justin Fields suffers right hand injury vs Vikings
The Bears quarterback Justin Fields, who wanted to be the king of North, attempted to elude pressure in the third quarter of the game by dropping back to pass and running toward the visitor’s sideline. On the opening drive of the quarter, Justin Fields was sacked by Vikings defensive end Danielle Hunter at that moment.
After attempting to pass the ball to running back Darrynton Evans, Fields was later seen cradling his hand as he made his way to the locker room. He intended to complete the game, yet the Bears ruled him out as he could not hold the ball.
NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported that the 25-year-old suffered a dislocated thumb on his right hand. Fortunately, his X-ray report was negative. He is now scheduled to have an MRI on Monday to learn of the additional damage.
The fan-favorite quarterback completed 6-of-10 throwing for 58 yards and an interception, and also ran eight times for 46 yards before heading back to the locker room with a towel covering his right hand.
Tyson Bagent replaced Justin Fields during Bears vs Vikings
Justin Fields’ injury unfolded an opportunity for undrafted free agent Tyson Bagent to take the spot against the Vikings. By then, the Bears were down, 12–6. Even though Bagent’s performance wasn’t particularly noteworthy, the rookie athlete did everything in his power to meet the Bears’ expectations.
Tyson tossed 10 of 14 for 83 yards and an interception. The Chicago Bears team had added Tyson as an undrafted free agent in May and recently elevated him as second-string quarterback on their roster over Nathan Peterman.
Before the Bears vs Vikings game, he took spot in limited action during his team’s three preseason games. The Bears coach Matt Eberflus claimed as per ESPN that the rookie player’s athletic prowess prompted them to give them the chance to play as Fields’ backup.
“I thought he started out, was not great at first, but again that’s everybody. That’s 11 guys in there operating. But I think once he got settled down, he put that drive together and then you could see what he can do. He could do off-schedule stuff. He can escape. He made a few nice throws there, and his mobility is good. I thought his timing was good on a lot of those passes that he threw. So I thought he looked good.”
Reportedly, the injury could force Justin Fields to miss several games, a disappointing hit for the Bears who are already suffering a string of setbacks to bounce back from.
