Why is Dawand Jones known as “Big Thanos”? Here’s 3 things you need to know about Browns OT

The Cleveland Browns are currently trailing behind the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC North with a 3-2 mark. After giving a huge blow to the so-far undefeated San Francisco 49ers in the last match, the team is on its way to hunting the Indianapolis Colts in the upcoming campaign.

One of the major reasons behind the Browns’ offensive success is Dawand Jones, who was selected by the franchise with the 111th overall pick in the 4th round of the 2023 NFL draft. The offensive tackle is also popularly known as “Big Thanos,” and there’s an interesting reason behind this nickname.

Why is Dawand Jones known as “Big Thanos”?

At 6 feet, 8 inches, and 374 pounds, Jones has brought both size and power to the Browns’ offense, as in the team’s recent win against the San Francisco 49ers, he showcased incredible steals for them. The veteran was known as “Big Thanos” in Ohio State due to his gigantic physique, which was taken from the giant villain from Marvel’s Avengers.

After drafting him this year, Browns General Manager Andrew Berry also revealed his exclamation regarding the young star’s body, saying human beings with such a big body are actually rare to find.

“I mean, he’s not just big. He’s like ‘human orca’ big. I just don’t think you really see people with that size and that movement ability.”

Dawand didn’t develop his big body suddenly; in fact, he was born with it. He measured eight pounds, one ounce, and 21 inches at birth, and the doctor initially declared that he was off the chart for expected growth. Though the offensive star might be called Big Thanos by others, his mother Deanna calls her son Valdez, like most other members of her family.

Three things to know about Dawand Jones

Dawand has been creating a buzz in the Browns’ O-line, and besides his football prowess, there are three other things about him that shouldn’t go unnoticed.

Jones sacrificed his NBA career for the NFL

The young tackle was an immense basketball lover and was planning to play in the NBA, donning the Buckeyes basketball team. However, he could not stand in two boats at a time and had to hang up his sneakers before deciding to enlist himself as an NFL prospect.

“I just had to take my business from basketball and push it to football and make that dream the same dream. I used to say I wanted the NBA. So I just switched that to the NFL. All that’s changed. I just let it go out the window,” he said via Browns Nation.

Jones once also Bowled

The Browns OT once even made up his mind to move on from football to advance his career on the basketball court. With a gigantic physique, he had the potential to become a three- or four-star designation. The footballer used to visit Ben Davis on trips home and even inquired about the potential chance to practice with the basketball team before becoming the largest player on the team.

Four Year Player for the Buckeyes

Back in 2019, Jones played nine games as a backup for the Buckeyes while appearing in six matches in the following year. In 2021, he showcased incredible performance by leading the team to an 11-2 mark as well as a Rose Bowl win and he stayed with them for his senior year as well.
