Stephen A. Smith is widely known for his penchant for making entertaining, and at times, bold statements on-air. In a bizarre and awkward moment that unfolded during Thursday’s episode of ESPN’s “First Take,” Stephen A. Smith found himself at the center of an uncomfortable on-air interaction with co-host Molly Qerim.
What began as a seemingly innocent discussion about NFL wide receiver Davante Adams quickly spiraled into an embarrassing exchange involving the word “vibrating.”
Stephen A. Smith brings up vibrators to Molly
Last Thursday, during ESPN’s First Take, as the show delved into a conversation about Davante Adams’ frustrations with the offense of the Las Vegas Raiders, Smith’s attention was drawn to a sound in the studio.
Mistakenly, he thought he heard Molly Qerim’s cell phone ringing. In an effort to make himself clear, he declared, “That’s Molly’s cell phone ringing by the way.”
Molly, with a hint of discomfort, corrected him, stating, “It’s not ringing.” However, Smith persisted with a mischievous grin, saying, “[It’s] vibrating.”
Caught off guard by the innuendo-laden word choice, Qerim’s expression shifted from bemusement to mortification. She quickly distanced herself from the conversation, humorously remarking, “I want everyone to know that I distance myself from these comments. I have nothing to do with anything that just happened.”
The situation only escalated as Stephen A. Smith, seemingly oblivious to the discomfort he had created, continued to make matters worse. He attempted to clarify his intentions, saying he was “trying to avoid the vibrating,” causing an awkward silence to fall over the studio, on-air.
Former NFL player and co-host Dan Orlovsky, seemingly embarrassed by the exchange, sought refuge beneath a red Phillies towel, his face concealed from view. Orlovsky candidly expressed his concern, stating, “I’m trying to avoid getting fired.”
FIRST Take cast severely scrutinize Molly’s outfit
Elsewhere on the show, the conversation took an unexpected turn when Stephen A. Smith shifted the topic towards Molly’s outfit. He playfully challenged her about what she was wearing, leading to a lighthearted exchange that left everyone in the studio amused and surprised.
Stephen A. took it upon himself to share Molly’s outfit with the audience, drawing attention to her attire. He turned her laptop to the camera to showcase what she had on during the show, which immediately prompted laughter from guest Kimberly A. Martin. In a moment of amusing confusion, Stephen A. mistakenly claimed that the outfit was not pleather, only to be swiftly corrected by Molly Qerim herself, who clarified, “It’s pleather!”
Following a more focused look at the computer screen, Stephen A. had to concede, “It is pleather.” The playful banter continued as Dan Orlovsky, a former NFL quarterback, couldn’t resist getting up from his chair to inspect the outfit displayed on Molly’s laptop.
