The Chicago Bears are off to a struggling start after managing just one victory this season so far. Their first-string quarterback, Justin Fields, is also experiencing an uphill battle after suffering a gruesome injury during the team’s last Sunday’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings.
As the Bear’s fears about his injuries have escalated significantly, they chose to take a bold move regarding their quarterback’s game status for their upcoming battle, unfolding an opportunity for their undrafted rookie QB, Tyson Bagent.
Bears officially ruled out QB Justin Fields
The fan favorite Justin Fields sustained the injury in the third quarter after being sacked by Danielle Hunter. He landed on the field awkwardly on his hand and was apparently very hurt. The 24-year-old left the field early before identifying that he had dislocated his right thumb.
Fields did not take part in the team’s practice during the week. As the Bears are gearing up for Sunday’s home game against the Las Vegas Raiders, Bears head coach Matt Eberflus confirmed Friday that the fans have to see Justin bench rather than donning the Bears jersey and assisting his team in winning.
Despite the team’s need to make this move, Eberflus confirmed that their third-year player is improving and that he would be evaluated on a week-to-week basis, which would enable them to assess his condition on Monday.
“He’ll be out this week, but he’s improving,” Eberflus said. “The mobility’s getting better, the swelling went down, the grip strength is better. It’s trending in the right direction. He’ll be week-to-week and we’ll know more Monday.”
Along with this positive update, the coach also said that, having seen Fields’ steady recovery, they had no intention of putting him on injured reserve.
“We’re not on that path right now. Like I said, we’re trending in the right direction.”
Since taking over as the Bears starting in his first season of 2021, Justin Fields has missed eight games. So far this season, the Bears player, who aims to become king of the North, tossed 1201 yards, 11 touchdowns, and six interceptions.
Tyson Bagent to replace Justin Fields to make his NFL debut
Justin Fields’ injury forced the Bears to find a solution with their undrafted rookie Tyson Bagent. The rookie player will make his first NFL start Sunday in place of Fields at Soldier Field, holding 61,500. Prior to that, Bagnet made his NFL debut against the Vikings as Fields’ replacement.
In a 19–13 loss, he delivered an excellent 10-of-14 performance for 83 yards and an interception after getting a spot for the first time with the Bears. He also had two rushes for four yards and a touchdown.
Bagnet expressed some hope following his assignment to the backup position and made it plain that he is prepared to give it his all on Sunday and gather a pile of wins for the Bears before their first-string quarterback returns.
“I think everything that has happened and will happen was already set in stone to happen. And I think coming from where I come from, I’ve pretty much beat every odd that there was for me. So, I’ve got nothing to lose.”
Prior to heading to the NFL, Tyson had established a prolific resume as the quarterback at Shepherd, a Division II football powerhouse. He threw an NCAA record 159 touchdowns, including 53 and 41 in his junior and senior seasons, respectively, according to NFL.com.
He also garnered a host of accolades, becoming the DII’s all-time leader in throwing yards with 17,034 yards, including 5,000 and 4,580 in his final two seasons.
