Tyrod Taylor’s triumph as Daniel Jones’ replacement marks a historic moment for black QB in Giants’ history

The 2023 NFL season has been the worst for the offensive side of New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones. After embracing a 3-24 defeat from the Seattle Seahawks in week 4, he had to exit the week 5 game against the Miami Dolphins due to a neck problem. His performance throughout these weeks was not laudable either.

Jones has been out of the field for two games now, and Giants coach Brian Daboll has recently said he will return to action when healthy. Meanwhile, the franchise is banking on backup signal-caller Tyrod Taylor for the role. Besides leading the Giants to a win, the QB has also set a new record in the NFL.

Tyrod Taylor’s win marks a landmark moment for Giants

Though the Giants led in the red zone five times in their Week 6 game against the Buffalo Bills, Taylor could not break the losing streak and embraced a 9-14 loss. In the week 7 game against the Washington Commanders, he started for the second straight game, and this time, victory couldn’t get out of his hand.

Aside from ensuring a 14-7 win over the Commanders, the vet also became the first Black QB to win a game for the Giants in the team’s 99-year history since getting founded in 1925. Following the game, he seemed excited to be a part of history.

“It means a lot. I didn’t know that going into it. If I’m not mistaken, I think I did it at another organization, as well [Los Angeles Chargers]. But I mean it’s history. Proud to be part of it.

Geon Smith played as the first black QB for the Giants back in 2017, and Taylor is just the second player in the spot to be a starter. He seemed extremely proud of the team’s recent win while saying he would be looking forward to nailing the job if given the opportunity in the upcoming week.

“Ultimately, I’m proud of the guys and the way they competed this past weekend. Something to build off of. There’s a lot of positives from that game. I look forward to continuing to keep, if given the opportunity, competing with the guys on Sundays and going out there and striving for a win.”

However, Taylor’s position as a starter for the third consecutive game is still uncertain. Daboll didn’t give a definite answer about his quarterbacking job in the match against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium on Sunday. However, he indeed praised the dual-threat for his recent performances.

Giants’ end 4-game losing streak with an impressive win over Commanders

By picking up the seven-point victory over the Commanders, the Giants ended their four-game losing streak and proceeded to a 2-5 mark. The match at MetLife Stadium on Sunday also marks their first home win.

The Giants squad in the absence of Jones has been suffering terribly till week 6. Though Taylor couldn’t showcase much potential in his first match in the absence of the QB1, he played magnificently in week 7. The vet completed 18 of 29 passes for 279 yards while scoring two touchdowns along with zero interceptions for a passer rating of 116.9.

The Giants’ O-line as a whole played well as they amassed a total of 14 points from that line. Their defense also performed notably by pitching its second consecutive first-half shutout and pressurizing the Commanders QB Sam Howell for the whole time.
