Rams injury report: Matthew Stafford’s UCL sprain puts Brett Rypien in starting position against Packers

Though the Los Angeles Rams were going on equal footing for wins per losses till Week 6, they had to digest two consecutive defeats in their last two matchups. With only three wins as well as five losses, the team is sitting at the third spot in the NFC West and is unlikely to move forward to secure a playoff spot.

The Rams head coach Sean McVay predicted the timing of his son’s arrival on the earth perfectly and even projected a good update for the future, but things didn’t quite work out well on the gridiron and they had to go down to the Dallas Cowboys 43-20 in Week 8. Besides, the recent injury of their starting quarterback Matthew Stafford has raised uncertainty about his availability on the roster.

What is Rams QB Matthew Stafford’s injury?

Matthew Stafford had to miss eight games in the 2022 season due to a spinal cord contusion. He embraced bad luck this season as well after sustaining a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his right thumb. The veteran suffered the injury during the disastrous 23-point loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.

The Rams earlier ruled out linebacker Earnest Jones (knee) as well as tight end Hunter Long (hamstring) for Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers. Stafford has been listed as questionable in the team’s injury report. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, he is unlikely to play in the upcoming match.

Schefter also noted the Rams are giving him all the time they can before they have to make any final decisions about his availability on the field. The team’s HC also revealed their QB is “progressing well”. Stafford completed 59.7 percent of his passes for 2,070 yards while scoring eight touchdowns along with seven interceptions this season.

Rams plan for Rypien to take the helm

The Rams earlier decided to check Matthew Stafford’s pregame condition. They were trying to have a final conclusion regarding the starter after witnessing if their QB1 can grip the ball without any restraints. Schefter reported that the team has a plan for Brett Rypien to take the helm in the match against the Packers unless Stafford surprises by waking up feeling ready.

The NFL insider later came up with another update saying Rypien has taken all the first-team reps and that he is ready for Sunday’s contest. The team is most likely to sit out their QB1 to avoid aggravating his thumb injury.

McVay earlier heaped praise on their QB2 saying he has had a strong week of practice. He enjoyed his previous season with the Denver Broncos and is 2-1 as a starter. The 27-year-old threw for 42 yards on 5-of-10 passing while scoring no touchdowns and interceptions in the Rams’ last week’s match against the Cowboys.
