On the grid, every driver is a competitor to one another, regardless of the friendships that may exist behind the camera. However, in this highly competitive world of motorsport, learning from one’s peers is a common practice as drivers continuously evolve and adapt to new strategies and techniques.
Even a seven-time world champion like Lewis Hamilton is no exception. Recently, the British driver was observed closely examining Red Bull’s car at the Brazilian Grand Prix.
Lewis Hamilton caught spying on Red Bull’s dominant RB19 car
Lewis Hamilton was spotted outside the Red Bull garage after the sprint race, which was brilliantly won by Max Verstappen, inspecting the Red Bull car’s features.
With Verstappen clinching the World Championship title three consecutive times, breaking multiple records, it is not surprising that Hamilton tried to get a better insight into the car, hoping to gather some tips for himself as well as Mercedes.
Starting from the fifth position, the British driver encountered significant technical issues with his car, leading him to publicly criticize the vehicle. He has also cautioned the audience not to hold any hope of the team winning the Brazilian GP, considering that the recent version of the car is awful to drive.
At the US GP, Verstappen was engaged in a similar situation, with him examining Mercedes’s rear wing. However, he faced a substantial fine for touching the car after the race. Shortly after his actions, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc were disqualified from the race because their cars did not comply with the regulations issued by the FIA.
Lewis Hamilton claims Mercedes likely to close the gap to Red Bull
The Brazilian Grand Prix 2023 was an exciting event for everyone except for Mercedes, who struggled throughout the race. In response to the poor performance, Hamilton now claims that he is likely to see any further improvement in the car in the upcoming races.
The Mercedes driver raised concerns about the team’s capabilities, with him only being in the sport for two more years, according to his contract. He also claimed that Mercedes would have a tough time being a strong contender on the grid in the upcoming seasons due to the car’s declining condition. Hamilton said, “All I can do is try to remain optimistic. But the Red Bull is so far away, they’re probably going to be very clear for the next couple of years.”
