Roger Federer’s has gotten his Christmas present. Team Europe won the first four editions of the Laver Cup, but recently they lost to Team World for the second consecutive time in the last two months. The Swiss legend said that he would love to see Carlos Alcaraz help Team Europe next year in Berlin and the Spanish star has just granted his wish.
After a struggling display last month at the East Asian Swing that saw Carlos Alcaraz exit in the early rounds, the Spaniard has put that aside and is hoping to turn the tide around at the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin.
Carlos Alcaraz set for Laver Cup debut to help Europe’s redemption
Carlos Alcaraz will for the first time in his career join Team Europe for the 2024 Laver Cup in Berlin. Team Europe will be looking up to the two-time Grand Slam winner to help them avoid a third straight defeat to Team World. This comes after co-founder Roger Federer revealed two months ago that he would love to see more tennis stars join Europe’s course.
Team World were convincing winners in the Laver Cup this summer, but Team Europe captain Bjorn Borg is super excited to have Alcaraz signed up for next year. I’m leaving no stone unturned for 2024,” said Borg.
“The goal is to win and having Carlos commit to Team Europe’s cause is a thrilling start to what I anticipate will be an exceptional roster. What Carlos has achieved at such a young age is unbelievable. He’s a unique talent and should bring great energy to the team. I look forward to writing his name on the line-up card.”
Carlos Alcaraz, who defeated Novak Djokovic to win the Wimbledon Championship this year, is the first player confirmed to be playing for Team Europe. “I appreciate captain Borg’s confidence in me, and I look forward to teaming up with my rivals in both singles and doubles in Berlin,” he said. “It means a lot to represent Team Europe at Laver Cup, this is a great honour.”
“I will do whatever is asked of me to win back the Cup for Team Europe. I can’t wait to hear who will be joining me on the team next September. I will bring all I have to the competition to help win back the cup.”
The 2024 Laver Cup will be held at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Berlin from September 20–22.
Alcaraz expresses excitement for Laver Cup debut
Carlos Alcaraz, 20, has won 12 ATP Tour singles, two Grand Slam titles and four ATP Masters 1000 crowns. The Spanish star became the youngest player to reach the top of the world ranking in September 2022, at just 19. He is currently ranked 2nd behind Novak Djokovic in first place
Carlos Alcaraz reacted to the news about him joining Team Europe on X, formerly known as Twitter: “Ready to take back the Lave Cup title with Team Europe!”
Team World captain John McEnroe expects Team Europe to be highly motivated in 2024 following back-to-back defeats. “I anticipate another tough battle,” he said. “Europe has many great players and has consistently been favored on paper. We’ll be ready for them though. We’ve tasted victory twice in a row and will put up a fight to hold onto the Laver Cup.”
Carlos Alcaraz would be hoping he wins the ATP Finals in Turin after coming off a bad run of form that saw him lose to qualifier Roman Safiullin in the opening rounds of the Rolex Paris Masters and his title drought since winning the Wimbledon in July.
