Moises Caicedo may not be the fanciest or most famous player soccer fans know, but the Ecuadorian defensive midfielder is on the verge of completing a British-record transfer to Liverpool. The Reds have been rebuilding their squad after performing below expectations last season. Despite their late win run, Liverpool finished fifth in the Premier League.
Jurgen Klopp has chopped and changed his midfield in this transfer window, signing two young midfielders from Brighton and RB Leipzig, then moving on older and fringe players like Naby Keita, James Milner, Jordan Henderson, and Fabinho. Caicedo may be Liverpool’s latest midfielder if everything goes well today.
Liverpool set to sign Brighton star Moises Caicedo with £110M record deal
Moises Caicedo played a massive role in Brighton’s European qualification last season as he was rock-solid in midfield and often played in defense, thanks to his versatility. The 21-year-old was the second player with the most tackles in the Premier League last season from a defensive midfield position, ahead of another British transfer record owner, Declan Rice, and big names like Casemiro and Rodri.

Caicedo had been mooted to sign for Chelsea, who spent weeks negotiating with Brighton for a deal to bring the Ecuadorian to Stamford Bridge. However, reports broke out yesterday that Brighton was done with the player and would sell him to the highest bidder. Liverpool entered the party with a British record fee of £110 million, £5 million more than what Arsenal paid for Declan Rice.
Brighton accepted the offer without wasting time, granting Liverpool permission to discuss personal terms with the player. Chelsea could now look elsewhere, possibly stepping up their chase of Romeo Lavia or exploring other quality options in the midfield area.
Moises Caicedo Brighton career highlights
Moises Caicedo signed for Brighton as a 19-year-old in the summer of 2021 from Ecuadorian club Independiente del Valle in a £4.5 million deal. He couldn’t break into the first team in his first season at the club, so he was sent on loan for the 2021/2022 season.
His breakthrough season came in 2022/23 when he established himself as one of the Premier League’s finest midfielders, appearing 37 times in the league, scoring two goals and setting up another two.
The midfielder made 100 tackles in the Premier League last season, the second-highest in the league, only behind Fulham’s Palhinha, famous for his tackling abilities.
