Donald Trump’s past endorsement resurfaces as Joe Flacco returns to NFL with Browns

The AFC North has been highly competitive in the 2023 NFL season. All four teams in this division are having intense competition to secure a playoff run. The Cleveland Browns are currently sitting in the second spot in the AFC division, behind the Baltimore Ravens.

With a 7-3 record, the Browns have picked up three consecutive wins in the past few weeks following a 20-24 loss against the Seattle Seahawks. However, the season-ending surgery of Deshaun Watson has been like a nightmare for them. Now, the franchise has decided to bank on veteran signal-caller Joe Flacco for a while amid Watson’s injury-plagued season.

Trump declared Flacco an ‘elite quarterback’

As the rumor about Flacco being a potential signal-caller for the Browns started swirling in the air, the NFL community rallied on social media to share their take on this move. Meanwhile, an old comment from former United States President Donald Trump about the dual threat has resurfaced on X, formerly known as Twitter.

In that social media post, Trump was asked if he thinks Joe is an elite QB. The ex-president gave his nod in favor of the veteran player, saying Joe was indeed an elite player, given his one Super Bowl title at that time.

“I think Joe Flacco is, actually, a very elite quarterback. He won a Super Bowl, he did it really, to a certain extent, with that great arm of his. I would say absolutely. He is an elite quarterback,” he said via The Spun.

Flacco started his NFL journey after being drafted by the Baltimore Ravens. Though the signal-caller couldn’t prove his caliber initially, he moonlighted as a hero after a while, and by 2012, he had recorded five playoff wins.

However, the QB couldn’t bring the Super Bowl to the franchise until the 2012–13 season. He grabbed his first Lombardi trophy by winning Super Bowl XLVII against the San Francisco 49ers in 2013 and was even named the MVP. The video of Trump dates back to 2015, when the footballer was fresh off the Super Bowl.

Browns secure Super Bowl-winning QB Joe Flacco

Days ago, ESPN reported that the Browns might bring Flacco for a workout. The source said that as Watson is done for the entire season due to a fracture to his throwing shoulder, the Browns have been eyeing the former Super Bowl champion as a third QB on the roster.

The Browns have rookies Dorian Thompson-Robinso and PJ Walker in the QB room as well, and apart from Flacco, they did not reportedly work out any other signal-callers. According to a recent report by Adam Schefter of ESPN, the team has signed him to their practice squad following a successful workout session on Friday.

Though the Browns have stayed tight-lipped about the acquisition, a source told The Associated Press on Sunday night that they would finalize a contract with him on Monday. The 38-year-old has not played this season after playing with the New York Jets during the 2022 season. He threw for 42,320 yards and 232 touchdowns in his career.
