Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor have one of the iconic rivalries in the UFC. The pair met at UFC 264 in what was McGregor’s last trip to the octagon. McGregor broke his leg in the first round of the bout and is presumed to make his return at UFC 300.
Poirier last fought at UFC 291 in an unsuccessful attempt to claim the BMF title against Justin ‘The Highlight’ Gaethje. Poirier is apparently without an opponent and wishes to compete at UFC 300. He is looking to find a suitable opponent for the highly coveted UFC 300 PPV event.
Dustin Poirier seeks fourth Conor McGregor bout at UFC 300
Dustin Poirier was recently in Las Vegas to watch the Fight Night event headlined by fellow Louisiana native Brendan Allen and also for the Las Vegas Grand Prix. At the UFC Apex, Poirier was interviewed by Megan Olivi where he delved into his future plans and the state of the lightweight division of the UFC.
Poirier is ranked 3rd in the lightweight division. The first-ranked Charles Oliveira is scheduled to fight champion, Islam Makhachev in the Summer of 2024. Gaethje, who defeated Poirier recently is guaranteed a title shot and is awaiting the winner of Makhachev vs. Oliveira. 4th ranked Beneil Dariush is set to headline UFC Austin in December against surging contender Arman Tsarukyan.
Michael Chandler is ranked fifth and his last fight was a submission loss to Dustin Poirier at UFC 281. Moreover, he is rumored to fight Conor McGregor at UFC 300. However, no official confirmation has been made by the UFC. Hence, there are rumors swirling of Poirier fighting McGregor for a fourth time.
Olivi inquired about the potential fight between the two. “I probably would try to shut him up once and for all”, said Poirier on the prospects of facing McGregor for the fourth time. Poirier after losing their first fight at featherweight defeated McGregor in their two bouts in the lightweight division.
Conor vs Dustin possibility at UFC 300
Dana White in a recent social media post announced the main events for UFC 297, UFC 298, and UFC 299. Enigmatic MMA journalist, The Schmo a.k.a Dave Schmulenson confirmed via sources that McGregor vs Chandler is official for UFC 300. However, White did not attest to the Schmo’s claims.
Ariel Helwani broke the news via sources that Charles Oliveira vs Islam Makhachev was official for UFC 297. However, Dana White announced via social media that UFC 297 would be headlined by a middleweight title clash between Sean Strickland and Dricus Du Plessis.
Mystic Mac has, on occasions, called for a fight to get back at Poirier, who is now 2-1 in their series. However, in their trilogy fight at UFC 264, McGregor broke his foot, resulting in a Doctor’s Stoppage. In their first meeting at featherweight at UFC 178, McGregor quickly dispatched Poirier in the first round. Poirier returned the favor at UFC 257 with a second-round KO.
The chances of Dustin Poirier fighting Conor McGregor at UFC 300 are very slim. Dana White, in a recent press conference, said that Chandler is next for McGregor. Moreover, John Kavanagh, the head coach of McGregor, in his recent interview with Ariel Helwani on the MMA Hour, insinuated that the UFC is looking at a later date for the Irishman’s return.
