David Benavidez embraces Mike Tyson after victory over Demetrius Andrade, calls out Canelo Alvarez

David Benavidez scored a spectacular TKO victory over Demetrius Andrade in the recent PBC PPV, snapping the undefeated streak of Andrade. Benavidez, himself is undefeated in professional boxing, finishing 24 of his 28 victories by KO/TKO.

Andrade’s corner threw in the towel after six rounds after Andrade suffered brutal blows in the fifth and sixth rounds of the bout. Unfortunately for Benavidez, his older brother suffered a unanimous decision loss to Jermall Charlo in the co-main event of the PPV.

David Benavidez beats Demetrius Andrade

Demetrius Andrade and David Benavidez fought an entertaining fight in the short duration of the bout. Andrade was significantly faster and elusive in the opening rounds but Benavidez slowly poured on the pressure and even scored a knockdown in round 3.

From the knockdown, it all went downhill for Andrade as he could not recover and Benavidez poured in power punches, which ultimately forced the corner of Andrade to stop the fight. Benavidez was jubilant in victory as he went outside the ring to meet his idol, Mike Tyson, who was cage-side for the event.

Tyson congratulated Benavidez for the victory, and the interim WBC middleweight champion was visibly thrilled by it. Benavidez had been a guest on Tyson’s podcast, ‘Hotboxin’ with Mike Tyson’, two years prior. During the podcast, Benavidez predicted that he would defeat both Caleb Plant and Canelo Alvarez, who were scheduled to fight each other at that time.

David Benavidez calls out Canelo Alvarez

Benavidez is the mandatory challenger for Canelo Alvarez after Benavidez defeated Caleb Plant in March of 2023. WBC chairman Mauricio Sulaiman confirmed that Alvarez should be fighting Benavidez by March of 2024, or else would be stripped of the WBC title elevating Benavidez to the undisputed champion. Benavidez, as of now has defended the interim belt twice.

In the post-fight speech, Benavidez once again called for a fight with Canelo Alvarez. “Let’s give the people what they wanna see. Who wants to see David Benavidez vs Canelo?” said Benavidez. However, Alvarez has not yet responded to the callout. All signs point to a potential Benavidez vs. Alvarez matchup in early 2024.

Alvarez, in his most recent bout, fought Jermall Charlo on September 30, 2023, winning comfortably via unanimous decision. Unified welterweight champion Terrance Crawford eyed a matchup with Alvarez after he defeated the then-undefeated Errol Spence Jr on July 29, 2023, with a 9th-round TKO.

With Benavidez calling out Alvarez after two high-profile victories over Caleb Plant and Demetrius Andrade, the Mexican superstar would likely feel obligated to take on his mandatory challenger. Moreover, his systematic destruction of Andrade served as the icing on the cake, given Alvarez’s own proficiency in systematic destruction.
