In the ongoing discourse about the state of the NFL, former quarterback Alex Smith emerged as a prominent voice, pushing back against Tom Brady’s recent comments on the perceived mediocrity in today’s NFL. Sitting alongside fellow “NFL Countdown” panelists Randy Moss, Teddy Bruschi, and Rex Ryan, Smith expressed his strong opposition to Brady’s assertions during “Sunday NFL Countdown.”

Smith didn’t mince words as he challenged the narrative, particularly focusing on Brady’s divisional competition during his career. He argued that Brady had the advantage of playing in “the most uncompetitive division in NFL history,” suggesting that the ease of the competition granted him multiple playoff tickets with minimal resistance.

“He played in the most uncompetitive division in NFL history. I mean, you come out of training camp in the biggest cupcake division, you got a ticket to the playoffs right away,” remarked Smith.

The former NFL quarterback didn’t stop there and went on to convey his discontent with Brady’s words about NFL mediocrity. While Brady highlighted a perceived decline in the appeal of plays over the middle of the field to receivers, Smith took a different stance, asserting that the game has, in fact, improved.

“Like, talk about mediocre. I completely disagree with this. I know he’s talking about the rule over the middle over the field to the receiver. But in my opinion, the game has gotten better,” stated Smith.

Earlier, Miami Dolphins player Tyreek Hill expressed his disagreement, suggesting that Brady can freely voice such opinions now that he’s retired. Despite the criticism, some notable figures, including Tom Brady’s former teammate Rob Gronkowski and the Jets’ Aaron Rodgers, have come out in support of his remarks on the current state of the NFL.

In the ever-evolving landscape of the NFL, one striking trend has emerged which is a consistent decline in scoring for the fourth consecutive season in 2023. Teams are now collectively averaging just 43.3 points per game. It showcased a downward trajectory from 43.8 in the previous season and a notable dip from 45.9 in 2021, as reported by ESPN.

Tom Brady is not holding back on sharing his candid opinions about the current state of the NFL. Appearing on the Stephen A Smith Show,” Brady expressed his dissatisfaction with the contemporary level of play. 

In his eyes, today’s football lacks the captivating essence it once possessed, and he pinpointed “mediocre performance” as the chief culprit behind this disappointment.

“I think there is a lot of mediocrity in today’s NFL. I don’t see the excellence that I saw in the past.”

Tom Terrific delved into the reasons behind his evaluation, emphasizing coaching and player development as key areas where the league falls short. He criticized coaching standards, lamenting the diminished quality compared to the past.

The fifteen-time Pro Bowler also expressed concern about the development of young players. Furthermore, he took issue with the amended NFL rules, asserting that the league has allowed undesirable habits to seep into the game’s actual performance.

“The coaching isn’t as good as it was. I don’t think the development of the young players is as good as it was. The rules have allowed a lot of bad habits to get into the actual performance of the game.”
