When it comes to tennis players, everything about their professional career is properly documented, from the age they first picked up a racket to the type of court they most prefer playing on and how many titles they have won. However, often little is said about their private lives.
That is the case with Alex de Minaur and Katie Boutler, who made the pair a tennis power couple at the Australian Open mixed doubles. Their relationship has been growing and recently, while Alex was away at the Davis Cup, Katie cheered him to the final.
Alex de Minaur delights his sweetheart by reaching two Davis Cup finals
Katie Boutler was proud of her boyfriend Alex de Minaur even though the star lost 6-3, 6-0 in the final of the Davis Cup. Alex de Minaur, who has been in incredible form this season after achieving a career-high ATP singles ranking of No. 11 on October 2, was expected to put a tough test on Sinner but the Aussie star fell to defeat very easily.
Alex De Minaur had booked Australia’s place in the Davis Cup final after a commanding 6-4, 6-3 win over Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori. Fellow Australian Alexei Popyrin had drawn first blood in the semi-final clash against the surprise packages of the tournament, as he claimed a hard-earned 7-6(5) 6-2 win over Otto Virtanen earlier. Australia, in a commanding position, left the victory at the hands of Alex De Minaur to do the rest and despite being made to sweat at times, he powered his way past his 24-year-old Finnish opponent in one hour and 34 minutes.
However, Katie Boutler, who told Sky Sports Tennis that she would be watching all the games at the Davis Cup, posted on her Instagram story about how proud she was of her boyfriend. “Back-to-back finalist. Proud as it gets,” the Brits wrote.
Jannik Sinner beats Alex de Minaur to win Italy Davis Cup in 47 years
Just like the Canadian Open, Alex de Minaur fell to a defeat against Jannik Sinner 6-3, 6-0 at the final of Davis Cup. Australia and Italy had taken a place in the final of the knockout phase after the former defeated Finland and the latter beat Djokovic-led Serbia.
In the final, Italian Matteo Arnaldi beat Australian Alexei Popyrin 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 in a nervy opening singles match to put Italy 1-0 up in Malaga. After that, Sinner backed up his sterling week with a 6-3, 6-0 win over De Minaur. “It has been an incredible feeling for all of us, obviously, we are really happy,” Sinner said. It is the second time Italy has lifted the Davis Cup, having previously won the title in 1976.
28-time champion Australia was bidding for another Davis Cup title but lost back-to-back finals, having been beaten by Canada last year. World no.12 Alex De Minaur featured in last year’s loss to Canada in the final at the same arena was left crushed after the defeat.
“There hasn’t been another nation that’s gone back-to-back in the last two years, so we are showing a pretty good effort collectively,” Alex de Minaur told reporters. “We are very, very close and it stinks like hell but, like I said last year in this same position, we’ll be back. We’ll get this. I mean, we’ve got a very, very strong future ahead of us.”
Australia’s 28th Davis Cup title came in 2003 and they have since reached the last two finals without their most talented star, Nick Kyrgios, who is currently sidelined by injury and last played Davis Cup in 2019.
