Chelsea are not having a good season, recently losing 4-1 to Newcastle United. The Blues are only 10th in the Premier League standings and are hoping to solve this issue soon. Even after spending so much money on the squad, co-owner Todd Boehly has failed to see any improvements in the team.
According to many reports, the club is now once again ready to spend big this winter to allow more reinforcements to arrive and help them achieve their goals.
Chelsea list Victor Osimhen as top target
Despite signing Nicolas Jackson this summer, Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino wants another big-name striker to join the club to help score goals. And according to many sources, their main target is Napoli’s talismanic striker, Victor Osimhen, in this winter transfer window.
Osimhen is currently uncertain whether to extend his stay at Napoli after falling out with the club over their social media attacks on him. Even though Napoli want him to sign a new contract, it is being thought that he is preparing to leave as soon as possible.
Napoli are also not ready to let him leave easily, with Osimhen’s contract existing until 2025. A price tag of £150 million has been put on him, which has deterred many clubs from going in after him. But Chelsea, who have already shown to spend big on players will have no problems paying that fee.
Osimhen has also previously spoken about his love for Chelsea legend Didier Drogba, and he seems to be very open to the idea of moving to Stamford Bridge. However, Chelsea’s recent failures with the fact that they may not qualify for Europe again may lead to Osimhen not coming to the club. With the club suffering a lack of a consistent and clinical finisher, Osimhen seems to be their best bet.
Chelsea’s spending since Todd Boehly takeover
Chelsea have spent a lot of money since being taken over from Todd Boehly and his American consortium in 2022. Since then, the club has spent over €1 billion in just three transfer windows. They have signed 25 players in that timeframe. The previous summer transfer window saw them spend €450 million, a record for a single transfer window.
Some of the big money signings were Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, for €121 million and 116 million respectively. The latter was the British record signing, before the latter broke it this summer. Other players include Wesley Fofana, Mykhailo Mudryk, and Christopher Nkunku among others. Most of the signings are yet to provide any significant impact since their arrival.
It seems that the Blues have been mindlessly spending money under Todd, and that they need to spend it more smartly if they are to help the team grow.
Chelsea have a game against Brighton next on Sunday, and will hope their fortunes turn with a victory.
