Erling Haaland played a pivotal role as Manchester City staged a comeback from a 2-0 deficit to secure a 3-2 victory over RB Leipzig, preserving their flawless record in this season’s top European competition. Haaland’s goal in the match marked his 40th in the Champions League, achieved in just 35 appearances. Haaland became the youngest player in history to have reached the 40-goal mark, breaking a record previously set by Kylian Mbappe.
Erling Haaland’s extraordinary week of breaking and setting records continued as he became the fastest player to achieve 50 Premier League goals. This milestone was reached in his 48th match in the English top-flight, surpassing the previous record held by Andy Cole, who accomplished it in 65 games.
At halftime, Manchester City was still trailing behind Leipzig, but the match ended with a City victory. Speaking on the remarkable comeback, Pep Guardiola said:
“Of course we are incredibly happy to have qualified with two games left. Finish first. We have time to think about it. Maybe we were not… clinical is not the right word… not clear, sweet, soft enough in the last moment to score more goals. But I love to see the team.
“The word that define this group of players for many years is the consistency. We have high standards and and that is why we are still in the Premier League up there and qualified from the Champions League. People say ‘yeah, the group stage, it is easy’, but you have to do it. In life, you have to do it when people expect you to do it. Two games left. Leipzig are the toughest opponents in this group and we have to try and finish further. It is important in the last 16 to have the weapon of second game at home rather than away.”

According to Josko Gvardiol, Erling Haaland has already mastered the art reminiscent of Lionel Messi, appearing disinterested before proceeding to score a hat-trick.
City colleague Gvardiol, who experienced Erling Haaland’s prowess firsthand during a five-goal performance while with RB Leipzig in the 2022–23 season, has remarked:
“I would like to forget about it! I’m happy to be his team-mate. It wasn’t just about Haaland, it was the first XI on the pitch, it was a hard game. As a centre-back I was looking forward to facing Haaland but it didn’t finish good. He scored five goals in 60 minutes. When I saw him getting subbed off I was very happy. Erling is… at the beginning of the game he is nowhere, then he turns up and scores a hat-trick.
“What he’s done, I don’t understand how but I enjoy [playing with] him. I’m happy to be part of this team and being surrounded with amazing players is something some people can’t imagine. I take every day to learn from the best. You never know what will happen next season. Use every day to make yourself better.”
