Jamie Carragher has never shied away from little controversies, even if it means provoking the ire of some of the biggest names in football. The Liverpool legend has always maintained an incredible stance on the Lionel Messi-Cristiano Ronaldo GOAT debate, and he made it clear once again in a recent panel debate on the subject.
“Ronaldo is nowhere near the level of Messi. Ronaldo is one of the greatest goalscorers of all time. Messi is the greatest player of all time; it’s not even close,” Carragher, who now is a full-time CBS Sports pundit, explained.
“He wasn’t at his prime at United,” Carragher argued after being told by an opposition that Ronaldo was once the better all-round player. “Of course, he was a great player, but I think he was at his best at Real Madrid,” the former Liverpool defender concluded.
It’s quite understandable why Carragher would have a hard time accepting Cristiano Ronaldo as the best player the world has ever seen. The Portuguese forward was a part of the Manchester United squad that tormented Liverpool from 2003 to 2009, winning four Premier League titles, one Champions League, and making back-to-back UCL finals.
Despite supporting Lionel Messi, the Englishman once revealed how the Argentine once slid into his DM to call him a ‘donkey’ after the pundit had criticized the then-PSG forward after a Champions League game.

It’s no surprise how Jamie Carragher has never acknowledged Cristiano Ronaldo as one of the greatest football players the sport has ever seen. His assessment of Ronaldo’s career performance has always come from a place of sentiment, and a fan quickly pointed that out after his latest comments on the Ronaldo-Messi GOAT debate.
The fan posted a video of Cristiano Ronaldo ignoring Jamie Carragher while greeting other former players during a game involving Manchester United. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner completely ignored Carragher and proceeded to greet the likes of Roy Keane and Gary Neville.
Carragher’s recent comments will not affect Ronaldo, who has been in great form this year, scoring 48 goals for club and countries, making him one of the highest goal scorers in the world this year, only behind Harry Kane and Erling Haaland.
The former Real Madrid forward also scored a Puskas-worthy goal, a 40-yard lob to help Al-Nassr secure a league win over Al Akhdoud.
